Kootenay, Whelsh Norbert

W. Norbert “Bert” Kootenay our beloved son, brother, uncle and friend left to be with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on Friday, March 24, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 33 years at his home surrounded by family.

Bert is the beloved son of Beryl Kootenay of Calgary and Jackson Jacobs of Tsuu T’ina Nation. He leaves to mourn his siblings Floronda (Stacy), Blaine, Candace, Lance, Edward and Trina; and paternal brothers and sisters of Tsuu T’ina and Siksika. Norbert was predeceased by his brother in 2001.

Bert was raised on the Stoney Reserve by his paternal grandparents, the late Douglas and Ruth Kootenay. He received his elementary education at Morley School and his secondary education at Springbank and Dr. Collett schools. Bert was an avid athlete as a tracker and field runner and he enjoyed the rodeo. He was his late grandparents personal handyman and he enjoyed keeping his home well maintained. Bert learned to do his own plumbing, electrical and framing. He was a free spirited traveller, going to many places. He enjoyed the west namely, Vancouver, and Seattle, WA. Bert brought home many stories about his travels and always exhibited a resilient spirit of hope brought about through his exuberant humour. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends from all walks of life near and far.

Wake Services will be held at the residence of the late Ruth Kootenay (Bear Hill, Morley, AB) on Monday, March 27, 2006. Forward condolences through The family wishes to thank all who supported Bert, his caregivers, namely Jessica of Stoney Health Services, the Calgary Hospice, St. Stevens Anglican Church and the many street ministries across Canada such as the Mustard Seed in Calgary.
