KONRAD, Francis “Frank” John

June 11, 1936 – Budapest, Hungary
September 29, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta

Frank, beloved husband of Mary Konrad (nee Nemeth) of Calgary, AB, passed away on September 29, 2013 at the age of 77 years. Frank’s strong love of family was obvious throughout his lifetime and was particularly evident during his last days which were spent with his loved ones close by his side.

Frank was born in Budapest, Hungary and bravely set out with his young wife, Mary, to Canada in 1957. They settled in Calgary where they began raising their four children until their move to Lethbridge in 1970. There, Frank owned and operated several businesses including Epicure Fine Foods and Delicatessen. Frank and Mary returned to Calgary in 1985 where his deli expertise was respected by first Safeway and then Co-op. He will always be remembered for his generous and kind heart, friendly nature and lively conversation. Frank’s contagious smile will be fondly missed by all those who knew him. Although travel, food and friends were a big part of his life, he was most fulfilled by his devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren.

Besides his wife Mary, Frank is survived by his four children George (Jane), Sue (David), Shirley (Shawn) and Francis (Barb). He will also be dearly missed by his four granddaughters, Kira, Madison, Lexi and Elizabeth. Frank was predeceased by parents Rosalia (nee Miller) and Ferenc Konrad and his brother Laszlo, of Budapest, Hungary.

Condolence Messages

  1. Michael Jorgensen :

Frank personified all the virtues of honour, integrity and selfless devotion to family.
From the first moment he met the love of his life Mary, Frank made the rest of his life
about elevating the lives of every member of his family and enriching every person he came in contact with. Although he wouldn’t consider himself a comedian, Frank was the truly the funniest and most authentic man I ever had the pleasure of spending time with. His love, kindness and tender heart made everyone in his world better for having known him. We are all better for having known him and his passing is a great loss for all who were fortunate enough to know the warmth of his heart.

  12. Jill and I would like to express our deepest sympathy to the Konrad family, on the passing of your remarkable husband, father, grandfather, Frank. We were next door neighbours (at 2402 6th Avenue South, Lethbridge) for many years, and I remember Frank as a man of great integrity and with an enviable work ethic. I recall his account of the difficult times he faced in Canada when he first arrived; and it is a tremendous tribute to his energy and intelligence that he became so successful. His son Francis Jr. was a playmate of my son Dominic when they were nine or ten years old. Dominic resides in England now, but has asked me to send his sympathies to you all. May you find strength and hope at this sad time. Always ~ Brian Tyson.

  14. Tracey Cuming :

    Dear Frank’s Family,
I was shocked and saddened to learn today about Frank’s passing. I only know Frank from COOP. I really enjoyed visiting with him and spent more time grocery shopping than the average person, I just loved his stories. He spent a lot time talking about his family, Arizona (and his gardening) his love of Hawaii and his love for his wife. Recently he shared some beautiful family photographs with me. I can’t imagine how hard this is for all of you he touched my life so briefly but I will dearly miss him. I considered Frank a friend even with our 30 year age gap. He was such a lovely man. My thoughts are with all of you. Tracey Cuming

  15. Robert Wilson :

This is very late but I have just found out about Mr. Conrad’s passing. When I was young friend of Susan’s, Mr Conrad was always very nice to me, treated me with great dignity, and modelled what a good man father should be as he always put his family first. I send you my greatest sympathy, even though belated. May you all be blessed and know he watches over you from heaven.
