KOHSE – Edward Herbert

March 25, 1929 – September 14, 2009

Ed Kohse passed away at the Foothills Hospital on September 14, 2009 at the age of 80. Ed will be missed as a loving husband of 57 years to Anita, a kind and patient father to five children, Victoria (Steven Potter), Gordon (Jane Dunphy), Vivianne (Douglas Macrae), Alexandra (Alan Jochelson) and Bruce (Lori Hahnel), and a devoted grandfather to ten grandchildren: Elena, Kieran, Alex, Emma, Lane, Billie, Davita, Thea, Nick and Dan. The son of Edward and Emma Kohse, he was predeceased by one brother, Fred, and is survived by another brother, Donald of Qualicum Beach, BC. Ed was born in Victoria, BC, and developed a love for the outdoors growing up in northern BC. After working with his father as a horse packer for the Geological Survey of Canada, Ed obtained a degree in Geology from the University of British Columbia in 1952. He enjoyed a long career in the Exploration department of Mobil Oil Canada, beginning with field offices at several locations in Alberta and BC, before moving to Calgary and later becoming head of the department. Ed enjoyed camping, riding and skiing, and he loved to fish. From the Highwood River, to lakes in the Northwest Territories, and many trips back to Vancouver Island to fish for salmon, he spent many happy hours with a fishing rod in his hand. He also enjoyed visiting (and fishing) with children and grandchildren at East Coulee, Alberta, and Burridge Lake, Ontario. He always had time to devote to his family and the community. His warm and quiet nature won him many friends and the respect and admiration of all who met him. Ed will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered as a tremendous husband, father and friend. A Celebration of Ed’s life will be held at St. Laurence Anglican Church, (5940 Lakeview Dr. S.W.), on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

In living memory of Ed Kohse, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. To Viv and Mrs. Kohse and the whole Kohse Family;
    I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad and Husband.
    I was just speaking to Rod (my husband) on the weekend about your family and how much you all meant to me during my childhood, and reminiscing about the many wonderful moments with you. Viv! Who could forget our Lemon Meringue Pie with the “cement crust” that your family ( including your Dad) so bravely ate for dessert? and the laughs we all shared? Your home was always a warm and welcoming place to me and I treasure the memories of my happy times with “The Kohses”. Your Dad was a calm and cheerful man and had a way of making me feel special. I remember when he did his own version of “rap” before we even knew what it was!! I am thinking of all of you in this difficult time with great affection. Thanks for the memories.
    Love from “just Joan”

  8. Ian Richard (Rich) Mayers :

    Anita; Victoria, Gordon, Vivianne, Alexandra, Bruce and Family:

    I met Ed when I joined Mobil Oil Canada as a Junior Geophysicist, in 1973. Later in the 70s and early 80s I also met his three, attractive daughters there, or on the Lakeview area buses. I was never fortunate enough to meet his sons; but I heard lots of very good things about all of his family from Ed (and his friends). Ed introduced me to Anita in 2007. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather; and was so justifiably proud of his family! Whenever I could, I tried to “pick his brains; on how to succeed as a spouse and parent” (time will tell on how well I’ve learnt his “tips and tricks”)!

    As a professional, Ed always offered sound advice combined with an easy companionship (enhanced usually by an infectious little chuckle). He was a true gentleman who was widely respected and liked; he was the sort of friendly, trustworthy person that one would instinctively seek out at any gathering. He will be sorely missed by me, and others!

    May God bless and give to you all; the strength to endure your great loss, and to recover gently during the difficult days ahead!

    Rich Mayers

    PS: Gordon: As an eldest son who has also buried his father, I offer my praise and respect for your moving eulogy at Friday’s service. A difficult task that was well done indeed!
