KILPATRICK, Eileen Martha

December 10, 1938 – Estevan, SK
June 8, 2014 – Calgary, AB

The Kilpatrick family is saddened to announce the passing of Eileen Kilpatrick, beloved wife of Ian Kilpatrick, mother of Frazer, Armelle, Aurele and Ariane and proud Grandmother to Shea, Sadie, Kyra, Josh, Caleb and Mitchell.

Eileen was born Eileen Martha Zimmerman to Marcus and Therese Zimmerman Dec 10, 1938 in Torquay, SK, one of thirteen children. After attending business education school, Eileen worked at Beaver Lumber in Regina where she and Ian (stationed at the RCMP) fell in love. After Ian was transferred to Thompson, Manitoba with the RCMP, Eileen followed where she worked as a secretary at Inco Mine. Later that year they were married in Torquay, Saskatchewan in Sept 1961. Soon after, they settled in Calgary where Ian took a position with the Calgary City Police.

Eileen obtained her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary in 1978 and was promptly hired by the Catholic school system, teaching a variety of students from Grades 1 to 12 over the next 25 years. She was an accomplished educator and was one of the first to teach computer skills—she was much loved and respected. After retiring as teachers, Eileen and Ian hosted numerous guests at a bed and breakfast in the Okanagan for over 10 years. She passed peacefully at Rosedale Hospice of cancer.

The family is extremely grateful to Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Rosedale Hospice for the excellent care she received. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to cancer research or www.hospicecalgary.com.

The service will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, (1566 Northmount Drive NW) on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Eileen Kilpatrick, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

I am so sad to hear this news. As a school mate to Aurele and Armelle, I remember how Eileen and Ian would dance so beautifully at the school dances that parents could attend. I remember driving behind their truck where Eileen would sit in the middle of the bench so she could sit closer to him. I remember working one summer with Ariane and being struck by her level of confidence, a reflection of her parents. Later I would see Eileen and Ian at children’s Christmas parties where they would take their grandchildren. Eileen was a stylish woman and a very good person.

I was shocked to hear of Eileen’s diagnosis, but so thankful that I had an opportunity to visit with her before she left us. I know this is a very difficult time for all of you, and I wish you strength and love. Ian and Eileen’s love for each other was always an inspiration to me and although I didn’t see them very often, it was always a pleasure when I did. My sister Moe and I had a great visit with them at Killiney last summer and I will hold that memory in my heart. I know you will miss her dearly.

It was about 40 years ago when two students called Eileen and Ian came into my radar in the Faculty of Physical Education (now under the esoteric title of Kinesiology) What a hard working caring pair they were. Everthing was done correctly without fanfare. I was touched by your generous life and now I salute you as a person who has left this world a better place. Requiescat in Pace.
