January 26, 1928 – Kamenka, Russia
January 10, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta
Mary is survived by siblings Jake (Anne) Dueck, Ike (Edda); sisters-in-law Marian, and Vivian, and children Brian, Richard (Anne), and Marianna. She was predeceased by John (Agnes), Edmund, Diane (Gordon), Louis, Albert (Rita), son-in-law Paul, her mother and father Marianna and Issac
Mom was born in Russia, and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1928. After landing in St. John, New Brunswick, Mom moved to and lived her childhood in Steinbach, Manitoba. Mom loved working with people so she taught school for one year before finding her calling as a nurse. She graduated St. Boniface School of Nursing in 1953, and started her nursing career in Saskatchewan where she became the matron in The Lampman Hospital in 1955. It was there that she met, and fell in love with an oil field worker named William (Bill) Kennedy. They wed shortly thereafter in Winnipeg and had three children, Brian, Richard, and Marianna.
Mom’s life was full beauty and adventure. She had a lifelong love of travel, and was able to fulfill that love by visiting numerous countries in Europe, and by living in the Middle East. She loved learning about new cultures, embracing the local customs and the food, and marveling at the natural splendor that was before her.
Mom also loved music – it emanated from her. She was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice, and sang many solos as young woman. Her love of opera was evident every Saturday morning as ‘Live from the Met’ was often background music in our house as we did our domestic chores.
We will miss your beautiful blue eyes, your bright smile, your love and affection – we always felt loved. We are consoled by the fact that wherever you are, those around you are graced with your gifts which were ours for so many years.
