KEMP, Edward

November 14, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Ed Kemp, beloved husband of Margaret, passed away on November 14th, 2013 at the age of 79 years.

Ed was born in Lethbridge and spent his early years in Coutts and Calgary. In 1945, he and his mother joined his father in Bahrain where his father worked with the Bahrain Petroleum Company. In grade eight he went to Kodai Kanal School in India and later to the American Community School in Beirut. He returned to Calgary to finish high school and then took engineering at the University of Alberta where he met Margaret at a school dance. In 1956, Ed and Marg were married and moved to London, Ontario where he attended the University of Western Business School and earned his MBA. After graduation, he returned to Edmonton and started his thirty year career with Imperial Oil. He had assignments in Calgary, Tulsa, Regina, Toronto and New York. In 1979, Ed became Manager of the Production Division for Exxon in New York City and served as Chairman of Exxon’s Production Research Advisory Committee. In 1981, he became V.P. Exploration and Production for Exxon’s Middle East and President Esso Egypt. Returning to Calgary, Ed was V.P. Oilsands for Imperial Oil and on the board for Syncrude Canada Ltd.

After retiring, Ed took great pleasure spending time with family and friends, being at the cabin in Windermere, golfing at the Calgary Golf and Country Club and vacationing in Palm Desert. He was the #1 fan of all his grandchildren, attending every possible sporting event and musical recital. He was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s United Church. A truly generous, strong and kind spirit right to the end, Ed put the needs of others first, devoting time to family, charitable causes and helping those in need.

He was a devoted father to Janice (Dave) Fisher, Carolyn and Lesley (Henry) Engelking and loving grandfather to Jacquelyn, Julianne and Daniel Fisher, Lauren and Bradley Engelking. He will be dearly missed by Barb Haddon, Beth Howson, Robert (Doreen) Newton, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Millard and Velma and brother Deane Haddon.

  3. Kathryn and John McGrath :

Margaret and family, so sad to hear about Ed, he was always there to help others. We hope he did not suffer long or needlessly. Please be in touch as able. John is normally at home these days and would be glad to hear from an old friend. Last year we lost my father and his sister and it has taken its toll on John. I pray daily that we will come back to the life of golf and friendships that we once enjoyed with persons such as yourselves.

Take care and know that we are close by and thinking of you!
