KELLY, Irene Margaret (nee Wrightson)

January 17, 1920 – February 1, 2014

Irene Kelly passed away peacefully at the Mayfair Care Centre, Calgary on Saturday, February 1, 2014. It’s hard to sum up a life of 94 years.

Irene was born in Unity, Sask. and taught school when she met and married Vearl, in 1940. They lived and spent many special years in a number of Saskatchewan towns, before moving to Calgary in 1956. Vearl and Irene celebrated their marriage of 52 years, until he died in 1992. Irene cared for many; taking her mother, and then later, her sister, Madeleine Harrington, into her home.

She is survived by her four daughters: Vicky Williams (Paul), Judy Kelly (Trevor Stickler) Pat Warners (Louis) and Marilyn Kelly-McArthur; and by her six grandchildren Danielle Williams (Claude Riendeau) Kevin Williams, Jessica Stickler, Ryan Stickler, Aaron Warners and Jason Warners (Korrina Marks). She was also blessed to have four great-grandchildren: Jordan Laroche Miller, Deon, Alexis, and Isabella Williams. Also surviving her, is sister, Verda Houser and her children: Ed, Ron, Ray and Jo Ann, (and their families) who held a special spot in Irene’s heart.

The family would like to thank the staff of Mayfair Care Centre, Dr. G Hunter, and in particular her companions, Cathy Bosiak, Cathy Liddle and Debbie Heikkila, and special friend Janice Zingel. We were very lucky to have such a special lady for our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived and taught us all by example; she taught us well.

A Celebration of Irene’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through

  4. Brenda Wahlen and Len Wahlen :

Len and I wish to express our condolences to the Kelly family on the passing of their mother and grandmother. Having lost my own father at the age of 100 last November 22, 2013, I can say that you will be having a lot of very strong emotions at this time. The most powerful will be loneliness and not having a parent there to confide in and guide and support you. As they say, “the old order changeth”…now it is up to us to provide the guidance and support. Hopefully, we can do as good a job as our parents did.

    Brenda Wahlen
