KAZEMI, Kourosh

November 30, 1955 – Abadan, Iran
February 27, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Kourosh Kazemi passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the age of 58 years.

The world has lost an irreplaceable man who was a loving husband of 39 years to the love of his life, Nasrin; a devoted father to his three children, Kaveh, Kamilia and Kavous; an exemplary father in law to Yalda and Robyn and incredibly proud grandfather to his recently arrived grandchildren Ari and Amir. In addition he was a caring brother to Kayhan and Kamyar, uncle to his nieces and nephews, a dedicated mentor to many and a great friend to all. Like his older brother Kambiz, he predeceased his parents Ghodrat and Malekeh whom he greatly loved.

Kourosh was born and raised in Abadan, Iran before immigrating to Canada in 1975. He lived in Toronto before settling in Calgary where he would leave his mark on the oil and gas industry as well as the Calgary soccer leagues. He began his career working for Fluor Canada before accepting a position with Pembina. He started his consulting company Pars Projects shortly after and accepted a full time consulting role with Petro Canada while simultaneously consulting for several other oil and gas companies in Calgary. He accomplished his dream of starting his own engineering firm in 2012 when he founded Pioneer Engineering with the dedicated help of his youngest son Kavous. The company began with a small group of employees and had grown into a 50 plus person organization by the time of his passing.

Kourosh was also known for many years as being an active player and coach in the various soccer leagues in Calgary. Through this, he made a huge difference in the lives of many young individuals and helped shape, mold and guide them through various paths of life. He founded and proudly sponsored the Pars soccer club, which grew into three teams at its pinnacle; including securing a berth in the coveted Alberta Major Soccer League.

Beyond all, Kourosh was a dedicated family man, incredibly protective of his three children and deeply in love with his soul mate. His only goal in life was to ensure the happiness and success of his family, which was reflected in his passionate work ethic.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH), on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 2:00p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Kourosh’s name may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, Graveside service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolence Messages

  1. Maureen Huck :

I was one of the FIVE who OPENED the fitness room for the last 20ish years with Kourosh (we referred to him as CRASH) along with Bob, Brad, Lauren and myself. We would fight to be the first one in the fitness room every morning. Years ago we would wait at the back door for the door to open! Sometimes freezing in the cold.

We loved to see what new car he would be driving! In the earlier days we loved Christmas as he would bring the four of us gifts (pen sets, etc.). I still have them in my office!

I saw Kourosh on his machine that Thursday morning….but left moments before the incident happened.

Although I did not have the chance to say goodbye to him, he will forever be in my mind. I (we) will miss his dry sense of humour and his presence in the fitness room.

I am so sorry that I did not see you, Nancy and your son’s visit Friday, as I was in class next door. But I would like to convey my deepest sympathy to your entire family. He will be sorely missed by all. He made an impact on all who had the pleasure of meeting him!

    My sincere condolences,

    Maureen Huck

  3. Mr. Kazemi made an exceptional presence from the first moment and each thereafter. His love of soccer; classy life style; Foosball challenges; and genuine advice made every visit more anticipated and much more welcome (even after I run over a tree in his front yard!).

He inspired people through all walks of life with his sharp wit and charisma, and I always felt he wore the pride for his family above all.

My deepest condolences for your loss,

  5. Gary Connolly :

I was one of the many amateur soccer players who got to play under Kourosh at the Pars soccer club. Let me start by saying that Kourosh’s devotion and generosity towards his players was remarkable. Through his tremendous character he was able to build a tight knit club out of men from very different backgrounds throughout Calgary. I can also point to several occasions when Kourosh extended his generosity outside of soccer and helped players get started professionally. We are all thankful that we got to experience the profoundly positive force that Kourosh cultivated through our community.

    My deepest condolences,
    Gary Connolly

On behalf of the entire staff and the members of the Calgary Winter Club, please accept our sincerest condolences for your loss. Kourosh was much beloved by the staff and his fellow members, particularly those in the early morning fitness crowd. We received many calls on Thursday from concerned friends anxiously awaiting word on his condition. It is very clear that so many people here at the Club have the utmost of respect for Kourosh and consider him to be much more than just someone on the next cardio machine.

There are no words to ease the pain of your loss, but we hope that you will find comfort in knowing that Kourosh was among friends on Thursday morning, and that among the CWC family, he will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Ms Kazemi and family.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the priviledge and honour of working with Kourosh at Pembina when I first started as an engineer. He was an amazing mentor. His own thirst for knowledge was only matched by his desire to pass the knowledge on to others. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the family members of such a great man. Kourosh was like a second father to me growing up, helping me become the best soccer player I could be. Although he yelled extensively, I knew it was just because of his passion for the game. He will be deeply missed throughout the soccer community and with everyone he came in contact through his life.

I still wear my PARS Soccer Club gear proudly and will continue to do so in his memory.

He was the person that really changed my life and that of many others that had the pleasure to work with him. I will never forget how attentive he was to us, in every step of our way. He cared for everybody, like a father for his children.
I will miss our conversations, long drives to field sites, late nights at work, laughs and cheering over soccer games. Words cannot express the sadness my family and I feel. He will be missed in every good morning and goodnights, and will always live in our hearts.

I had the privilege of working under Kourash at Pioneer Engineering. Though my time with him was rather brief, the devotion to his craft and knowledge he shared with me will forever be valued. He made our work environment different than any other I’ve worked at. He took the time to know each of his employees and no matter how busy he was, always took the time to answer a question. He made every one of us feel empowered and responsible for our success.

Kourash will be sorely missed by everyone in his Pioneer family, not only as a boss, but as a friend.

My sincere condolences to Nasrin, Kaveh, Kamilia and Kavous.

I would like to express my deepest condolences for your loss. Kourosh was a great man who touched the lives of so many people. He was a great leader, mentor, friend and inspiration for me. I got the privilege to work directly with him for almost 5 years. I have spent many long days with him learning, discussing, talking and laughing! Kourosh was so much more than a boss… he was a dear friend!

I remember one very late evening at Pioneer like it was yesterday. Marc, Kourosh and I were setting up our new phone system and installing software on our new computers prior to Pioneer’s official opening. Marc and I were testing the phone system. The phone that we were testing had an extension of ‘111’, and we thought we had to dial ‘9’ first to make an external call. Instead we dialed 911 at 3am in the morning and the operator sent 2 police officers to the office to make sure everything was safe. Haha. We got a good laugh out of that one and Kourosh never let us forget it….

I will cherish so many fond memories of Kourosh for the rest of my life.

May you rest in Peace Sir and may the force be with you!

My sincere condolences for the sudden loss of a great man, Kourosh was a significant influence on me from the time I was a child until adulthood. I played soccer for the various teams that Kourosh coached and he always made a place for me as the team’s successes advanced. I know there will be many heartbroken teammates of mine and I would like to express how Kourosh played such an important role in the lives of so many young men. Not only through sport but in life off the field Kourosh was passionate and caring in his support for his players.

As a young man Kourosh’s team was an anchor for me as I went through the trials and tribulations of growing up and I will never forget the loyalty this man had for me and other players. We accomplished great things and suffered defeats but Kourosh always strived to be the best and I will never forget how it felt to be a champion. I will also never forget this man’s generosity and spirit and I believe that I, like so many of my team mates, are who we are today in part because of his example.

I am deeply saddened by the knowledge that I will never see Kourosh again at that I will never play for him again but he will always be my coach. I wish his family my best wishes in celebrating Kourosh’s life today and I am thinking of you all.

The news of the passing of Kourosh I received with great sadness. I met Kourosh through his great love of automobiles, I was at the time Sevice Manager for the Porche Dealership in Calgary. Kourosh had mulitple Porsches which he loved to drive and we were privileged to be his dealer of choice. I can safely say that in my forty plus years in the car business Kourosh was at all times a perfect gentleman, a good friend and the best customer any business could hope for.

I am deeply sadened at his passing and offer my sincere condolences to the family.

  26. To The Kazemi Family,

I was 16/17 when I first met Kourosh, he was my coach, came from a different club on the “rich” side of town to coach a group of misfits in the Northeast cause no one else would do it! We sucked, we played hard but we were more worried about beating people up and not “playing our game” as Kk would say. It was then I met arguably my best friend! His oldest son, and got to kick around with a super young and string bean named Kavous. Nasrin, we could hear her and Kami yelling from the stands every game! In 2010 he lent me a hand in stepping up my career and working for him, two weeks in, he threatened me with firing me because I was no good. Well, he was my coach, I just had to get better as work to him was like life on the field, he will yell at you and call you named but he would never leave your side! He was so much to me,y heart has been broken since last Thursday and I still tear up when it’s brought up. Nasrin, Kaveh, Kami, Kavous. You will always have him at your side, if he wouldn’t leave a kid from the hood, he most certainly will not leave yours. The Jorqueras wish you all the strength and courage you need at this difficult time. If you thought he could move mountains while he was alive, you haven’t seen anything yet! Right gooks?!

    Much love
