KARPERIEN, Gradus (Gerry)

August 31, 1928 – Slagharen, The Netherlands
July 6, 2018 – High River, Alberta

Gerry Karperien, beloved husband of the late Truus Karperien, of Calgary, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018 at the age of 89 years.

Gradus and Truus met in 1954 and they lived in the south Calgary/ Red Deer Lake area for 60 years.  Gradus immigrated to Canada in 1951. He was a labourer in Calgary for all of his working life. He worked for Hays Farm, Burns Packers, Bowness Bakery, and the Fish Creek Provincial Park. During these years he also had numerous part time jobs to help provide for his family.

He was a member of St. Patricks Parish for 60 years and he looked after the old church in Midnapore with his family. This included cleaning the inside of the church, mowing the lawn, maintaining the cemetery and painting the outside of the building.

He enjoyed raising fancy pigeons and many Saturdays were spent at the auction where he would buy and sell to other fanciers. He also loved to paint pictures and many family and friends were gifted with artwork.

He loved playing with his grandchildren (sometimes to the dismay of Truus when they got too rambunctious in the house) and he had a special bond with his great granddaughter Ellie.

Gradus was a tease and jokester and he always had a huge smile and hug for everyone. He was a kind, honest, generous, hard working and gentle man who always welcomed new friends.

Gradus will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Gradus is survived by his children, John (Karen), Margaret (Darcy); grandchildren, Alyssa (James), Trista, Gerard, Desirae (Linden); and great-granddaughter Ellie. He is also survived by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Gradus was predeceased by his loving wife, Truus Karperien on April 3, 2018. He was also predeceased by his parents Johannas and Hendrika Karperien as well as 4 brothers and 1 sister. ….

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church (1414 Shawnessy Boulevard S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the church. Graveside Service to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
