April 23, 1938 – Pollau, Czech Republic
November 26, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
Al Kapusta passed away on Wednesday November 26, 2014 at the age of 76 after a long and courageous battle with cancer with his wife Helga and daughter in-law Cindy by his side. He was born to the late Anna and Josef Kapusta on April 23, 1938 in Pollau, Czechoslovakia, Germany. He learned his trade of cabinet maker in Germany and immigrated to Canada when he was 17. He sent for his sweetheart Helga Elisabeth Zeller 3 years later and they married immediately in 1960 in Montreal, Quebec and relocated to Calgary, Alberta in 1967.
Al cofounded the Millwork Company Artek and in 1987 it merged with B.C. Millwork to form one of the largest Millwork manufacturing and interior contracting firms in Western Canada. He leaves a legacy of projects around the world but his favourite achievement was the designing and constructing of the animation desks for Walt Disney Animation. He was a perfectionist and that led to his great success! He was an avid skier, sailor, and craftsman, a man who would try anything once, or twice! But his greatest love was for his family.
Albert Pike wrote “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” Al did everything for his family!
Survived by his wife Helga Kapusta, daughter Daisy Kapusta (husband Ron Humeny), son Stephen Kapusta (wife Cindy Kapusta). Grandsons Nicholas Jones, Daniel Kapusta (wife Laura Thomson), Christopher Kapusta (Jen Fisher), numerous loving nieces and nephews extended family and many great friends. He is predeceased by his only sibling, brother, Joe Kapusta (survived sister in-law Jean Kapusta).
