JUDD, Alan Sheldon

March 5, 1919 – Toronto, ON
March 7, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Al Judd of Calgary AB, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2014, at the age of 95 years.

Al was born in Toronto and lived in Sarnia, Calgary, Edmonton, and Cochrane Alberta. He signed up for the armed forces when Canada joined the war in 1939. He served in England as a radar officer and saw active service until the war ended. He married Joan Lee upon his return in 1945 (Joan passed away in 1960). Upon being discharged from the RCAF, he enrolled in the University of Toronto and obtained his degree in Electrical Engineering. They lived in Toronto and then Sarnia where Al worked as a professional engineer at Imperial Oil. He started there in 1955 and after a long, successful career, he retired in 1984. He married Audrey Humphries in 1963 whom he met at Imperial Oil.

We all share great memories of him singing and playing the piano. “Alley Cat” and “One Fish Ball” come to mind. Al was dedicated to his family and loved to spend time camping with his beloved grandkids. He spent a lot of time after his retirement travelling with Audrey all around North America in their motor home. He had a calm demeanor and could always be depended on to come up with funny or almost funny quips. He loved carpentry and was always building things for the grandchildren. He built each of them an authentic scale dollhouse, showing amazing patience and attention to detail. Throughout Al’s later years, the family was always his greatest joy. Visitors, especially his grandchildren, were always welcomed with a huge smile.

Al is survived by children, Nancy Blanchard, Ron (Diane), Brian (Sheryl), Paul (Susan) and seven grandchildren, Chris (Chris), Alexandra, Heather, Megan (Zach), Andrew, Kimberley and Kelsey. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Audrey on March 7, 2013. He was also predeceased by his brother, Harvey; sister, Muriel; and his parents, Rachel and Albert.

His life will be celebrated at a private family gathering. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549,
