JONES, Frances (Fran) Mary

January 22, 1919 – June 10, 2012

On Sunday, June 10th early in the morning, our Mom passed away after spending the last few weeks of her life in the care of the wonderful folks at Chinook Hospice.

Tidy Fran will be sadly missed by all of her family: Susan and Bob Marshall of Calgary, Mark Jones and Sharon Balay of Edmonton and her six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Mom was born in Vancouver in 1919 and moved to Calgary with our Dad (Tom) after the war. We came along not long after and grew up in Elboya and eventually Mayfair. Mom and Dad were golfers and from 1960 could be found at Earl Grey Golf Course on most weekends and many other days. Mom continued actively golfing through 2010 and we don’t think that she ever lost a ball, well maybe on 7. Dad passed away in 2000 but Mom carried on and was an inspiration to everyone. A devout Catholic, Mom was part of the founding parishioner group at St Anthony’s where she could be found every Sunday, and on other days, in her regular pew on the right side. Other than her family, Mom’s friends from Earl Grey and from St. Anthony’s were a huge part of her life and we thank them for their kind thoughts in her last days. It was Mom’s wish that there not be a funeral service but sometime in the next while a Mass will be said for her at St. A’s.

We’ll miss you Mom…all of us …so, “Here’s to the glass, the lass …

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Any memorial contribution can be made in Mom’s name to the Chinook Hospice Resident Fund 1261 Glenmore Trail S.W., Calgary, AB T2V 4Y8, or a charity of your choice.

  2. Mary Anne Mulvihill :

    Dear Mark and Susan,

I was deepoy saddened to read in today’s paper of your Mom’s recent death. There are not many of the founding members of St. Anthony’s parish still with us, but on the odd occassion when I went to St. Anthony’s I still looked for her on the right hand side near the front …..

Obviously it has been a couple of years since I saw her last, she always asked about us and spoke of Mom and Dad. I remember her saying that she didn’t want a funeral, and there was no talking her out of that! Regardless, I will keep her in my prayers, and celebrate her life.

I know what a hard time this for you and your families. Even when there is a crowd around it is a lonely time; I understand and know well the experience of loosing your Mom.

Know of my gratitude for your Mom, and my gratitude that she was such a good friend to my Mom.

Please accept my sincere condolences, and be assured of my care and support for each of you at this time.

    Sincerely,
    Mary Anne Mulvihill

  5. Joyce Davis :

    Dear Susan, Mark and families
My friendship with Fran developed over the bridge trable where we met every other Tuesday for many years. She was always good company, friendly and hospitable. She made hundreds of baby gowns which she presented to new mothers and I received one for my daughter in law which I thought was very thoughtful. If anyone was ill Fran would whip up her famous brownies and deliver them to the door. I was the recipient of those brownies myself. She had a big heart and a wonderful smile. I admired her for her courage and independence as well. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all at this time. Joyce Davis

  7. Molly Johnson :

    Dear Susan and Mark,

My sister, Julie, gave me a copy of your mom’s obituary from the Herald. I’m very sorry to hear about her passing. She was such an energetic person and she always kind to me. I had to smile when you referred to her as “Tidy Fran” which reminded me of how she would pick up lint from the carpet when Susan and I were sitting in the living room. She will be missed.

    Love,
    Molly
