JONES – Stephen “Steve” John

December 17, 1959 – August 1, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden accidental passing of Stephen “Steve” John Jones on Monday, August 1, 2011 at the age of 51 years.

Steve was born and raised in Calgary and was the middle child of hardworking immigrant parents. His first job was as a cowpuncher at the Calgary Stockyards. In the early 1980’s he began a career-long employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway and worked in both the mechanical department and the running trades. One of Steve’s greatest accomplishments was qualifying as a locomotive engineer. Steve was proud to be a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE) and volunteered his time to union duties, most notably the compilation of the yearly holiday list (always a thankless job). He had a strong work ethic and took his duties seriously. He was an avid reader of diverse topics, an interest that no doubt helps explain his skill at crossword puzzles. Anyone who met Steve would remember his sense of humour. He loved to tell a good joke and could deliver a mean punch line. Ten years ago, Steve discovered international travel. His first trip was to Australia to visit family and then he hopped over to Thailand and promptly fell in love with the country. Having travelled to several places in Thailand, Steve discovered Phuket Island, which became his Shangri-La. During his travels in Thailand, Steve made many dear friends, most notably a German couple and their friend from Switzerland. Every year they would rendezvous and holiday together. He longed to return on a more permanent basis. Family and friends were very important to Steve and he would spend as much time with them as possible considering his consuming work schedule. He will be very sorely missed.
Stephen is survived by his mother Anne; brother David (Penny); sister Bronwen Hantos (Jeffrey); daughter Jennifer Crawford (Jeremy); son Robert; nephews, Justin Hantos (Heather), Zachary Hantos and Nigel Hantos; and nieces Melanie and Bernadette. He was predeceased by his father Derrick. Steve was soon to be a grandfather for the first time, as Jennifer and Jeremy are expecting their first child any day.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Stephen Jones, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

  3. Darrel Sundholm, President Div. 355 TCRC :

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Brother Steve Jones. He was a caring member of Division 355 who helped his brothers and sisters as an AV committee member. He wanted to help younger members in having AV in the summer months. Steve worked very hard and trying to make it work for them. For that and everything else he did for us I salute him. We had many discussions and debates about politics, world events and history. I will truely miss those times. I like to think I am a politically caring minded man. Steve was more caring and honestly wanted the average man to have the very best that our society is capable of giving.

It is with great sadness and a tear that I find out that my friend Steve has moved to the otherside. 15 years ago or so Steve and I went thru the same fight for our children and our lives in order to keep alive. We leaned on each other for help and kind words when few were found. We worked together for all the years on the railroad, and I was looking forward to traveling with; in our retierment. 18. Oh Steve! There are so many conversations I wanted to have with you. Whenever that call to work would come, I would hope to hear the trip would be with you. Insightful conversations, shared interests and always something learned for me. The day I heard of your passing I was in the process of moving downtown. I was looking forward to being closer to your neighborhood so we could enjoy some fine scotch together. I will have to be content with the memories. God speed my friend. Another adventure awaits.

  21. My path and Steve’s first collided sometime in the 60’s. Steve being a Sunnyside boy and me from West Hillhurst. We became friends when Steve started Jr high at Queen Elizabeth. We realized we had some clashes on the ice and the lacrosse box. I’m not too proud to admit that the biggest clashes were I could not score on him and if I tried to check him in the box, well I just ended up on my ass! We became friends anyway. When we arrived at high school I finally got the opportunity to play on a team with Steve. It was a good news/bad news situation, we won the city championship and it was a pleasure to play beside Steve, but I also had to scrimmage with Steve every day and he practised as hard as he played! After our school years life took us in seperate directions for a while and then amazingly re-connected at Canadian Pacific. I saw Steve in tough times and I would say chin up bro, do the right thing and hope for the best, you need a shoulder call me. Things started to turn to the upside for Steve at a time when I had challenges to face and guess who was there! The last few years my contact with Steve was always him bringing a train from Red Deer and handing it to me to take to Medicine Hat and sonofabitch if that train didnt get delayed while we did a “life” briefing and forgot about the job for a while and discuss thoughts of going somewhere exotic together and blow some CP pension coin in just a few years. To Robert and Jennifer, I saw the pain and hurt in your father while you were unable to see him and please know that your fathers love was always there. Your father and I had some adventures in our day and the memory of your father that I will take to my grave is the way his face lit up one day when I asked if he’d been in touch with you. Never feel remorse for your time apart from your father but do take solace in the fact that your father was feeling very good about his life these days and you, Robert and Jennifer, gave that to him! Your Father, David and Bronwen’s brother, Anne and Derrick’s son, a friend….Steve Jones a man that will be remembered.
