JOHNSTON, Darryl John

June 27, 1964 – Oshawa, Ontario
August 16, 2014 – Sicamous, BC

It is with much sadness and broken hearts that I announce the sudden and tragic passing of my beloved life partner Darryl Johnston on Saturday, August 16, 2014. He was taken suddenly in an unfortunate boating accident on the Shushwap Lakes.

Darryl attended school in the Oshawa area and also took studies at Durham College. He was an avid ski leader of the ski patrol, an enthusiastic motorcyclist and of most recent a knowledgeable and competent boater. His long and distinguished career in the IT industry was what he was most proud of, and he had made long and lasting friends and partners in that field.

Darryl will be missed and loved as he always stood for integrity and honor, with a fun attitude toward life and friends. Darryl is survived by his partner Colin Ward of 26 years, and his ever trusted new set of pets the border collies Gemma and Jax. Darryl was predeceased by his loving parents Florence and John Johnston of Oshawa.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Darryl Johnston, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  2. Colin,
I was shocked and very sad to hear the news. I hope you are recovering from your injuries.
It has been many years… my sister married Darryl’s good friend and I met Darryl when he was best man at the wedding. I had the pleasure of meeting you with Darryl at your home when they came to visit you one summer. I remember a lovely evening with a great meal and lots of laughs.
    Condolences, Lisa

  3. Dear Colin. I can’t put into words how I feel about losing my young cousin. We had a lot of years between us and my most vivid memories were when he was a young boy but with the onset of Facebook we had started a new relationship and had gotten to know each other as adults. I am going to miss all our little jabs back and forth about the weather, usually Calgary’s, and our talks although in writing about everything else. His comments and photos of the dogs made it quite clear how he felt about them and the fact the two of you had such a long lasting relationship says a lot about how he felt about you. Colin, you have my deepest sympathies.
    Janet

  7. Colin – my heartfelt condolences. I patrolled for years with Darryl at Oshawa Ski Club and even had a hand in his rookie training. When he was offered his first job in the west, in his words it took ‘about a nanosecond’ to consider and say ‘yes’. We missed him but he was in his element. I hope that your physical injuries are healing with the help of Gemma and Jax; your heart will take much longer. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Colin… I am so very sorry for your loss of Darryl and I hope you and your pups are recovering. I never had the pleasure of meeting you. I wish you much love and strength during this difficult time. I worked with DJ for a number of years from SHL to now at Softchoice. I currently reside in Oshawa and can fondly remember discussions when he would joke with me on how was the ‘Shwa’. When I learned of the tragic accident, I was dumb founded as I had spoken to him a few days prior. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Darryl, is and always will be a better person because of it. He was and always will be a very kind and special person. I am so very sorry for your loss. May you find rest Darryl.

  19. Colin,
I am in shock in hearing the tragic news. I don’t know if you will remember me, I was hired in Vancouver by Darryl and met you a few times on business trips to Calgary. I only worked for Darryl for a couple years and have nothing but respect for him. I remember how Darryl inspired me with his passions, work ethic and genuine love he displayed for you and his Mom. My heart is very heavy and sad as I lost touch with Darryl over the years and now I can never rekindle our friendship. I understand you were injured in the accident and I hope you are recovering. Darryl touched so many lives in such a positive way. Please know that my prayers are with you.
