JOHNSON, Ruby Ellen

February 10, 1963 – Treherne, MB
July 19, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Ruby was born in Treherne, Manitoba on February 10, 1963. The third daughter of Bill and Eleanor Johnson – sister to Sharon and Marj. Brother Paul soon followed and several years later, another sister, Karianne. From early childhood, Ruby believed in God and trusted in Jesus as her personal Savior.

The family moved to Calgary in February, 1969. As a child, Ruby enjoyed engaging family and friends with her imagination and creativity. She loved to create events. Ruby had her fashion debut at age 17, the creation of Marj’s wedding dress.

Ruby married David Broadhead on October 10, 1981 and they soon welcomed Cameron David and Melanie Iris.

In May of 1991, the family moved to Salem Acres, establishing a Bible Camp. These were busy years for Ruby. She poured herself into the surrounding community and the children and youth that came to camp. She still loved to create an event. She exemplified love, courage and caring for others like no other. She walked and taught her love for Jesus.

Seth John was born on May 24, 2000, in the Three Hills Hospital. After David and Ruby separated in 2007, Ruby and Seth moved to Calgary. Ruby joyfully became mother-of-the-bride to Melanie and welcomed a son, David Mctee on September 19, 2009.

Ruby Ellen Designs began in June 2009 with her first collection. Ruby’s reputation for event creation grew right alongside her passion for sewing and design.

In March 2010, Ruby presented her designs at Alberta Fashion Week. This launched R.E.D. as a significant icon in Calgary fashion. Soon after, she opened her first studio and in three short years presented in Boston, Brooklyn and New York. WOW! This was a beyond amazing accomplishment. She was recently offered an opportunity to present in London. On May 9, 2014, Ruby celebrated 5 years of Ruby Ellen Designs.

Ruby became a “Glam-ma” on Friday, June 27, 2014, and rejoiced with Melanie and David as they welcomed Rachel Zion.

On Friday, July 18, Ruby came home from work, hugged baby Rachel, watered her flowers, and enjoyed the company of her beloved family over dinner. She experienced a brain aneurysm Friday evening and passed away peacefully early Saturday afternoon.

A Celebration of Ruby’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Ruby Johnson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  6. Sandra Thornton :

I knew Ruby only briefly – our lives touched when she designed a beautiful dress for me for the heart truth fashion show this spring. My husband passed away tragically 10 days before the event but I didn’t want to let Ruby down so I came and modelled the beautiful dress she had created. We stood together in the limelight for a few moments. I’m so glad we had that experience, and I am filled with grief for her family .

Our sincerest condolances to you and the family as you lay to rest your beloved Ruby. I loved her also and have only happy memories of working with her at Salem. 15. Darla Clapperton :

My deepest sympathy to Eleanor, Ruby’s siblings and her dear children and grandchild. Having worked with Ruby for 8 years at Salem I saw what a special, caring, loving, thoughtful, kind, considerate, helpful, compassionate, encouraging, understanding, (and the list could go on and on) lady that she was. It didn’t matter how many hours she had worked in a day if there was a problem Ruby was right there, if a kid needed a hug she gave them one. She always thought of others ahead of herself and was always there for you. I have such fond memories of dear Ruby. She certainly will be/is missed.
May God be with you and comfort you at this time of your loss.
    With love and prayers,
    Darla

  16. I only new Ruby for a short time but she was a truly lovely, caring, gentle soul. Today I found out about her passing after visiting her shop having not heard back from her and I have not been able to stop crying since because the world will not be the same without her in it. I can say whole heartedly she loved her family so much, she talked of finding peace and happiness over the last little while and she was grateful for all the support she had. She was excited and grateful to have the life she now had. I feel like I got to know her and her family well through our long talks everytime I’d go for a fitting. She always said she’d do anything to ensure I was happy and I truly believe she would have. My family was given furniture she no longer had room for when she last moved and I will always think of her when I look at those cases. Her love for her family was first above all else. My sincere condolences to her children, family and all who were honored to know her. She will be greatly missed and always loved.

I knew Ruby only briefly when she designed my wedding dress for me last year. Every time I would see her she always had a way to make me feel special. I have a feeling she made everyone feel that way!
I only knew her a short time but it was easy to see she had a heart of gold. What a talented and beautiful soul. I feel blessed to have met her. My condolences to her family and friends.

  20. My daughter, Jamie, and I just found out that Ruby has gone home. We know, that even close to a year later, it will still be very difficult for all of you.
I knew Ruby from her days of teaching Bible Club in Calgary and then we were blessed to have Ruby make a grad dress for our daughter several years ago now. We will always remember how she worked to make the dress exactly as Jamie desired.
May the Lord comfort your souls.
