Ruby was born in Treherne, Manitoba on February 10, 1963. The third daughter of Bill and Eleanor Johnson – sister to Sharon and Marj. Brother Paul soon followed and several years later, another sister, Karianne. From early childhood, Ruby believed in God and trusted in Jesus as her personal Savior.
The family moved to Calgary in February, 1969. As a child, Ruby enjoyed engaging family and friends with her imagination and creativity. She loved to create events. Ruby had her fashion debut at age 17, the creation of Marj’s wedding dress.
Ruby married David Broadhead on October 10, 1981 and they soon welcomed Cameron David and Melanie Iris.
In May of 1991, the family moved to Salem Acres, establishing a Bible Camp. These were busy years for Ruby. She poured herself into the surrounding community and the children and youth that came to camp. She still loved to create an event. She exemplified love, courage and caring for others like no other. She walked and taught her love for Jesus.
Seth John was born on May 24, 2000, in the Three Hills Hospital. After David and Ruby separated in 2007, Ruby and Seth moved to Calgary. Ruby joyfully became mother-of-the-bride to Melanie and welcomed a son, David Mctee on September 19, 2009.
Ruby Ellen Designs began in June 2009 with her first collection. Ruby’s reputation for event creation grew right alongside her passion for sewing and design.
In March 2010, Ruby presented her designs at Alberta Fashion Week. This launched R.E.D. as a significant icon in Calgary fashion. Soon after, she opened her first studio and in three short years presented in Boston, Brooklyn and New York. WOW! This was a beyond amazing accomplishment. She was recently offered an opportunity to present in London. On May 9, 2014, Ruby celebrated 5 years of Ruby Ellen Designs.
Ruby became a “Glam-ma” on Friday, June 27, 2014, and rejoiced with Melanie and David as they welcomed Rachel Zion.
On Friday, July 18, Ruby came home from work, hugged baby Rachel, watered her flowers, and enjoyed the company of her beloved family over dinner. She experienced a brain aneurysm Friday evening and passed away peacefully early Saturday afternoon.
A Celebration of Ruby’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
