JERRARD, Irene “Raye” (nee McDonald)

March 14, 1931 – Hull, England
April 18, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Raye Jerrard on Friday, April 18 at the age of 83 years.

Raye was a young nurse (WREN) when she met a charming sailor and “English patient”, Roy Jerrard, who she married in 1951. Immigrating to Canada in 1957, they settled in Etobicoke, Ontario where Raye was a pioneer in direct sales, working for Sarah Coventry Jewelry. In 1965, they (with daughters Shauna and Lisa) moved to Calgary. Recognizing her driving spirit, “Sarah” asked Raye to take the company west. A successful working mother in the 60’s, she was ahead of her time.

In the 70’s, after a few years in Kelowna, Raye and family returned to Calgary where she continued to pursue her love of glamour and sales, eventually managing the Eaton’s cosmetics department for several years until her retirement in 1996.

Following a granddaughter’s diagnosis with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in 1980, she became a passionate volunteer for the Canadian CF Foundation and served as National President for two terms, a role that took her to global CF symposiums in Israel, Russia and France. In 1992, in recognition of her work with CF, she received a Governor General’s medal. Earlier this year, Raye was honoured again by the CF Calgary Chapter and Kinettes for starting the successful fundraiser, “Wrapping for a Cure” twenty-five years ago.

Throughout her career and years with the CF organization, she forged many great friendships that would last a lifetime.

Raye was a kind-hearted and wonderful mother, nana, grandma, and auntie who leaves behind a legacy of love. Predeceased by Roy in 2004, she is survived by daughters Shauna Ryan (Murray) and Lisa Birnie (Brian), as well as cherished granddaughters Kelly Ryan, Jessie Robertson, Chelsea and Lorin Birnie. She is also lovingly remembered by extended family in England, and of course her faithful dog and companion, King.

A Celebration of Raye’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Forward condolences through In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Calgary & Southern Alberta Chapter, 1130F – 44 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 4W6 Telephone: (403) 266-5295, Raye’s family would like to thank the staff of Unit 81 at the Foothills Medical Centre for their compassionate care during her final days.

Condolence Messages

  1. Cathleen Morrison :

Raye Jerrard was a central contributor to the fight against cystic fibrosis (CF) both in Canada, and internationally, on behalf of the entire ‘CF’ community.

Devoted to her wonderful family, Raye extended her dedication to encompass all with a stake in defeating CF.

Though her fine example will stay with us, her passing is a major loss.

Deep condolences to Shauna, Lisa, Kelly and all members of Raye’s family.

  2. I knew Raye during my years at Kinsmen & Kinette Clubs of Canada. She was a tireless volunteer for the CF cause who never failed to express her and the Foundations appreciation for the support provided by Kin clubs. Her passing is a sad day for CF not to mention her family and friends and my sympathies go out to them.

  3. Doug Ingersoll :

I was National Kinsmen President during Raye’s tenure as President of CCFF (as it then was). I had the pleasure to work and meet with her on many occasions in the CF cause. Her heart embraced all who joined her in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis and she had a particular fondness for the Kin Association. She was a wonderful lady, a champion and advocate in the fight and a Friend. She will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to the Family.

  4. Phil and Sylvia Wall :

Raye was a great friend and an inspiration to all involved in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. She was a dedicated volunteer who led by example. We and many others who had the pleasure to work with her were always amazed by her zeal and dedication. While we lost touch in recent years, we have never forgotten her cheerful disposition, her warm hospitality and her wonderful smile. She was a pleasure to know and we cherish the times (though too few) that we had with her.
Our condolences to her family and her close friends.

  5. Raye and I met in 1957 when we found ourselves in our first homes across the road to each other. Both of us with one little girl and great dreams for the future. Our friendship over the last 57 years has been filled with many joys and a few sorrows but we were always there for each other. My love and thoughts are with her beloved daughters their husbands and her granddaughters all of whom she was very proud of. God bless Norma and her family.

We were very sorry to hear the sad news about our Auntie Raye. She was such a lovely lady and a great inspiration with all her charity work. I remember coming to stay with her and Uncle Roy, with my Grandad, shortly after my Nanna passed away. We shared a lovely holiday with them, creating many happy memories in such a beautiful country. They were both so kind and generous and clearly ‘family’ meant a great deal to them. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shauna, Lisa and their families.
With much love from her UK family,
