January 5, 1932 – Nelson, British Columbia
March 5, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
Derek Rollinson Jepson of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the age of 82 years.
He is survived by his sons, Kevin and Ross; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Levi.
We remember the man who first showed us the wonders of science, the beauty of the mountains, and the power and elegance of mathematics. Who explained the geology and history of the vast wealth that lies beneath our feet. Who told us wondrous tales of his adventures in the wilds of North East BC, on the drilling rigs of the prairies in the fifties, and growing up in Nelson, BC during the Great Depression. Who read the exploits of Julius Caesar to us in rain soaked canvas tents, over and over and over again.
A man who built models, read voraciously, taught us history, the skills of camping, fire making, axe, knife, and shooting safety.
A man who was not afraid to fire a black powder musket in the basement of our house in Calgary just to see how it worked! Who made a longbow from a yew tree just to see if he could. Who with our mother was more at home in the back country and the campground than in the City.
He did not wish to have a funeral so instead we will take his cremated remains high up into the Canadian Rockies when summer comes, to spread them there alongside those of our Mother, his Juney, there to become part of the landscape he loved.
Rest in peace, Dad
