JENSEN, Gordon Frederik

August 27, 1936  –  October 12, 2014

Gordon Jensen of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at the age of 78 years.

Gordon is survived by his spouse Betty; two sons and two daughters in law Warren and Brenda and Grant and Thuy; six grandchildren Jens, Lindsay, Kai, Jessica, Derek and Tiffany; a great granddaughter Isla; stepdaughter Kate Silver and Thuy’s mother Le Bui whom he loved and they loved dearly.

Gordon’s life and roots was Alberta. His parents Jens and Ingeborg emigrated from Denmark in the early 1920’s. They were very hard working and participated in the Danish culture and traditions. Gordon was a pride and joy and grew up working with the family business Sunnyside Greenhouses Ltd. He attended school in Calgary and graduated from Crescent Heights High School, he played football with the Calgary Broncos and hockey with the Calgary Buffalos.

Gordon married Betty and together they relocated Sunnyside Greenhouses Ltd. to their present day location in Bowness. Along with their sons has become a well known business that markets all things to make outdoor and indoor living comfortable and beautiful. In 2018, Sunnyside will celebrate 100 years as a Calgary business.

Gordon was a keen reader of newspapers and history. He also had an interest in vitamins, minerals and Chinese herbs. Some referred to Gord as the Doctor. Gordon travelled extensively and took the road less travelled to many parts of the world. He and Betty looked forward to Puerto Vallarta as a winter escape with Max by their side. Max was a much loved dog who Gord dedicated countless hours of walks and companionship.

Gord was a friend of Bill W. and was very active. He had many friends and acquaintances from all things he was associated with. He went golfing and lunching regularly and touched many with kindness, wit and a special kind of humor that was one of kind. Gord was a great employer of many people in his business and became a mentor, father and lifelong friend to many. He saw them finish educations, get married, have families and wherever possible continued as extended family. He was thankful and grateful to so many.

  14. Betty and family,

My sincere condolences to you all. I go back to Gord’s days at Crescent. At times I met him over the years, he kept reminding me of my hands being on his butt when he hiked the football to me.
I would run into him and the ” drinking buddies” over the years, and even in Puerto Vallarta. This June 11th, I celebrated my 45th year with Investors Group, and Retired August 31st. He always bragged how property and family was the best Investment, and I could never argue with him. His special sense of humor will long be remembered too.

    Most sincerely,

    Sam Fishman

My condolences to the family. I remember years ago working with Gord in the spring planting all the beds and planters surrounding sunnyside. Working in his yard making his beds look good. He would always make a point of coming out of his house to talk to me. It`s never easy to lose a loved one. Find peace.

  20. My wife & I rode our bikes past Sunnyside this afternoon & I noticed the flag @ half-mast. My first reaction was to wonder who had passed. I then said to my wife, “I hope it wasn’t Gord.” My family moved into 926 – 1st Ave NW in 1946 when I was 4 years old. Gord, 6 years older, was a good friend of Ron Benstead who lived 2 doors west of the greenhouses – across the street from us. Ron & Gord used me & my brother Lorne as a guinea-pigs for many of their ‘creative’ ventures. The green houses and all of the activity within were a great contribution during my informative years. Although I haven’t seen Gord for some time I have enjoyed telling the staff of Sunnyside a wee bit of the history whenever we were checking out our purchases. My thoughts are with you all. Gord Cook
