Condolence Messages

  1. Gail Helgason and John Dodd :

We would like to express our condolences to Lois and the rest of the family. I was born in Foam Lake, of Icelandic descent (my parents were Norman and Runa), and for a time Donna’s parents lived across the street from us in Foam Lake. They were good friends, and as I was interested in journalism, our mothers arranged for Donna to come over to speak to me about this career. I was in my mid-teens. I remember her telling me of the pleasure of crafting words. She was right, and an inspiration! It has been a rewarding career for me for 40 years. Later, my husband John and I both had the pleasure of working with her at the Edmonton Journal. We remember her with affection and respect. I did not know many women who pursued writing, so she was definitely a positive influence on my life.

  2. Ronnene Anderson & Mark Peppler :

To Donna’s family: I (Ronnene) worked with Donna on the copydesk at the Edmonton Journal for several years. We were friends, as well as co-workers.We had wonderful laughs together. I was always impressed by her determination, independence and upbeat attitude, despite her physical handicaps. I attended her birthday parties, and visited her after her hospitalizations. We shared our Christian faith, which was a great blessing. We shared our grief over the death of a mutual friend — Joe Walker, rector at St Timothy’s Anglican church (and former U of A chaplain). After Donna moved to Cochrane, we occasionally talked on the phone. I’ll miss her.
