Janice Lynn Waite Thompson

1956 – 2011

Janice passed away at home on Thursday, June 9, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband John, daughter Emma, parents Rev. Douglas and Jean Waite, siblings James (Joyce, step-children Robin and Matthew), Paul (daughter Elizabeth), and Leslie Anne.

For many years Janice contributed enormously to the musical life of Calgary as a pianist, chamber musician and teacher, being involved with the Conservatory at MRU, the U of C, the CPO, the Banff School of Fine Arts and the Instrumental Society. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Calgary Palliative Care Team and Com Care, especially Andrea O’Brien and Janet Hutton, for their devoted support and compassion in the last year.

A Memorial Service will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.) on Friday, June 17, 2011 at 2:00 pm. It was Janice’s wish that in lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to a charity of their choice. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Janice Waite Thompson a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

Dear John, Emma and the Waite Family,

I was So sorry to hear of Janice’s recent passing. My thoughts and prayers have been with you the past couple of days and trust that all the special memories you have will sustain you through this difficult time. You do not know me but I grew up in Grande Prairie and have known Janice since we were 12. I have fond memories of her as my rival contestant in the Kiwanis Festival – we studied piano with the same teacher, Mrs. Kazakoff. We played in the high school band, orchestra and sang in the choir all through high school. I lost contact except for a few ‘coffee dates’ here in Calgary.

she was a very gentle person, fun and always kind to everyone she encountered.

  40. Dear Rev. and Mrs. Waite,
You may or may not remember me from Janice and Ina’s and my U of A days. My name was Pam Braaten (now Ludwar) and Janice and Ina and I were the inseparable “3 Musketeers”,as some of our friends liked to call us. I wanted to extend to you both my most hearfelt sympathies. I received a phone call from Ina today, and am so immensely shocked and saddened. I so wish I had known that Janice was sick, as I surely would have visited her, since both our children live in Calgary, and we visit there from time to time. I now of course regret so much, that I didn’t take the time to do just that, over the past few years.
Janice and Ina were my two closest friends in Edmonton. We shared so many of life’s experiences together, through the growing pains of trying to become the best pianists that we could be, as well as enjoying many discussions about our mutual classes. I remember well Janice’s extraordinary abilities as a chambre pianist, as well as her fine scholarship as a student. Mostly, though, I remember her warmth and her kindness. We also spent one summer together at Banff studying chambre music with Isobel Rolston, who I grew to love just as much as Janice did. Janice and Ina were my bridesmaids at my wedding in Aug. of 1980 – I believe you sewed Janice’s bridesmaid dress.
I regret that we didn’t stay in touch over the years. I never met John nor Emma, but I know from Janice’s occasional letters at Christmas, how happy she was. I will be thinking about her for many days to come, and hope that you both, (as well as your other children) will be able to remain strong and that your pain will ease a bit, in the years to come.
    Sincerely,

    Pam Ludwar (nee Braaten)

Janice and I shared good times, confidences and friendship when we shared “rustic” accommodation in Banff for a number of summers. What a positive spirit, patient, talented, kind and compassionate person Janice was – and what a good friend during those challening summers, first as program assistants and then as accompanists for the Gifted Youth Program! Despite living in opposite parts of Canada Janice would always call to say “hello” whenever she was in Toronto. My husband David and I did enjoy meeting you, John, and I remember a lovely picnic with you, Janice and Emma on the shores of Lake Minnewanka the day after Shauna Rolston’s wedding! Dear Rev. and Mrs. Waite, John, and Emma,

I have just now on Facebook learned of Janice’s passing. My condolences to all of you on your loss. Janice was my roommate at Banff her first summer there as a student. Sadly, I am the last of that trio that had so much fun together at the age of 15 or 16. (Our other roommate, Adelyn Peck, passed away in 1995 after a long battle with breast cancer.) I last saw Janice in the fall of 1989; and John, I think we met then. My husband and I were driving to Yellowknife and passed through Edmonton. Janice has always been my example of how one can be wonderfully happy as a musician, loving the music, treasuring the students, and having a balanced and positive outlook on life. I have often thought of her over the years as someone whom I wished I were more like! The world has lost a lovely person and musician. Emma and John, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you move on with your lives. I have a daughter Emma, too. May the Source of Peace comfort you all.
