JACKSON, Carl Thomas

August 18, 1952 – March 6, 2018

Carl beloved husband of Geraldine Jackson of Calgary, passed away on March 6, 2018 at the age of 65 years.

Carl was born and raised in Innisfail, Alberta, to Dick and Ada Jackson. His was an adventurous spirit and this was reflected in both his professional and personal lives.

After high school, Carl attended the power engineering program at SAIT, convocating in 1972. While working and raising a young family, Carl continued to devote himself to his field. By 1977, he had become the youngest man to achieve a 1st Class Power Engineering Certificate, graduating at the top of his class.

He worked tirelessly throughout Alberta, taking on new and exciting challenges in Grand Cache, Forestburg, Grand Prairie and Peace River. In later years, his knowledge and experience were influential in Central and South America and as far away as Asia. Carl left industry to follow his passion for teaching taking on a new role at SAIT in 1991. He not only taught but also worked developing and improving the courses that were advancing his trade. After 20 years there, his legacy to his teaching took on a new chapter when he oversaw the design, construction and implementation of a state-of-the-art power engineering lab, which will continue to benefit future generations of students at SAIT.

In 1973, Carl married his high school sweetheart, Gerry Shanahan. These two kindred spirits came together in what was Carl’s greatest adventure. They both treasured family and expanded their own with the birth of Jason in 1975, and Chelsea in 1977. Carl loved his family as well as his large extended family.

Carl was a world-traveller; he embraced and explored exotic places such as the Amazon, China, Syria, and Kazakhstan to name a few. Mexico held a very special place in his heart. He spent his final days volunteering in Mexico teaching English to children and enjoying a peaceful lifestyle.

Carl was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Laura; and brother, Ralph. He is survived by his wife, Gerry; children, Jason (Catherine); Chelsea; grandchildren, Walker and Neve; his sisters, Wanda Guske and Ethel Dewitt; brothers, Gary (Marguerite), Rick (Marjorie) and Barry; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Donations can be made to the school in Mexico where Carl spent his last days teaching.

It is so long ago that our paths crossed Jerry that I wondered why I had this on FB from Jim Shannahan. Havent seen him since grade 10! Then the memories flooded in. It looks like life has been interesting and full. Do hope that you can continue with a comfortable peace and smiles. Think I remember that Carl’s family was connected with mine from Settler? Not sure there is no one left to ask. (a really old family)

Gerry, my heart is with you as you face this deep loss in your life and family. Carl added vivacity to every thing he took on; and was taken far too soon. The times we shared bring fond memories and reflections. Craig and Sandra still talk about the Christmas that we shared with everyone at Wanda’s house.
    Fondly,
    Marguerite
