November 4, 1923 – April 18, 2013

Alice passed away peacefully in the company of her family on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the age of 89 years.

Alice had dedicated 30 years to teaching Theatre, Drama and English in Korean Seminaries and Universities, under the auspices of the United Church of Canada, before returning to Canada with her husband, Rev. M. MacDonald (Don) Irwin.

Alice was the loving mother of Judith and her husband Manfred von Nostitz and Linda and her husband Drew Markham; dear grandmother of Kaspar and Otto von Nostitz, and Liane, Tara and Taylor Markham and great-grandson Luca.

Alice was predeceased by her husband Rev. M. MacDonald (Don) Irwin; parents Nelson and Vera Dahms; and brothers, John and Edward.

Parkminster United Church (275 Erb Street East, Waterloo, Ontario) was the sponsoring church of Alice and Don Irwin while in the service of the United Church. Alice’s name will be engraved in the church’s memorial garden as a remembrance of her life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a Memorial Service in Seoul, Korea, at Chodong Church, where the Irwin’s were part of the congregation for many years. Cremation has taken place and Alice will be laid to rest alongside Rev. Irwin, in a gravesite just outside Seoul. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Condolence Messages

  1. Harold & Loeta Black :

We are so sorry to hear of Alice’s death. We kept planning to contact her in the last year since she stopped coming to our retired minister’s group. But we so enjoyed our past visits with her. Had no idea she was 89! Harold’s parents were missionaries in the north Korea mission (Lungchingstun, Manchuria actually), and his two brothers were married to Avison girls of Seoul. We will let Anne Avison Black in Toronto know of this. What a wonderful life she and her husband have lived. Our sympathy and Christ’s blessings to you all.

  2. Gerry Scharff :

To the family: Alice was a very special woman and I so appreciated her considered opinions and faithfulness to life and to the ministry of the United Church of Canada. We often met at the lunches for the diaconal ministers in Calgary. One evening I gave Alice a ride to a supper meeting in the pouring rain and she helped me to get my bearings and lessened my fear of driving that night. She will be missed. She was a blessing to me.

  3. Terrence & Thelma Dugan & family :

Terrence & I are thinking of your whole family as we knew them. We recall the pleasant memories of all the social events held at Lakefield University. It was so great having Linda & Judith with Alice for tea in our back yard by the fountain and near the Japanese Maple Tree that glowed red in the sunshine. We remember you always, Alice. You will always be in my e-mails. We love you dearly and will keep your memory in our hearts forever.
