HUSBY-SCHEELAR, Margo

March 20, 1948 – February 13, 2013

Margo Husby-Scheelar of Calgary, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the age of 64 years after a courageous battle against H1N1 flu.

Margo was a valued member of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary. She was a dedicated teacher who took a personal interest in her students’ academic and individual success. Margo was honored with numerous teaching awards and accolades on the local and national stage. She believed strongly in lifelong learning and worked diligently with her students to instill such a love.

She holds Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Communication Studies and obtained her PhD in Education in 2003. In 2012, she took a sabbatical to complete a Master of Social Work degree.

Margo was an example of unconditional love who was never afraid to stand up for what she believed, her students and people she loved. She searched for questions and answers about the meaning of life and explored them through academic, religious and spiritual study. It was her hope that sharing her process of inquiry and knowledge would enable students, colleagues, friends and family to challenge themselves. She welcomed and encouraged discussion and debate to increase understanding of many perspectives.

Margo enjoyed traveling, reading, music, hiking and spending time with her friends, children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Greg (Eileen) and grandchildren Annika, Arlen, Emma and Xavier, daughter Andrea and grandchildren Naylan and Paytan, sisters Patsy (Larry) McNish and Aileen (Warren) Smith, brother Brian (Joan) and numerous nieces and nephews and her mother Phyllis; and the special people in her life including Ken Scheelar (husband of thirty-five years), Chuck and Jean Bourque, Phyllis Sawchuk and Leslie Blair. She was predeceased by her father Archie Husby in 2005. Margo Husby-Scheelar touched many lives in unique ways. What is certain, is that she will be missed by all who knew her.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. A memorial service at the University of Calgary will take place at a later date. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Margo Husby Mature Student Scholarship fund at the University of Calgary.p>

“If you knew the gift of God
    and what Heaven is.
If you could hear the angels singing
    and see me among them…
If, only for an instant, you could contemplate,
    just like me,
the Beauty before which all beauties turn pale.
    Trust me.
When the day, which god has stated and knows, arrives
and your soul, which has been preceded by mine,
    enters this Heaven,
That day you will see me again,
you will feel that I still love you,
that I have always loved you
and you will find my heart
    with all its love purified.

You will see me in transfiguration,
    in an ecstasy of happiness.
    No longer waiting for death,
    but walking with you
and holding your hand along new paths of light and life.

    So, wipe your tears away
and don´t cry, if you love me…”

  8. I knew Margo principally through my daughter and her husband, who were both good friends of hers, and whom she introduced to each other. In the last couple of years we connected frequently by Facebook, if not always in person, and I was struck by how common our values were. We were always sharing each other’s posts. I already miss her very much, and I can only begin to imagine what a loss her passing must be for her family. My sincere condolences to all members of her family.

  22. Greg, Andrea and families,
Thank you for sharing your mum with us. For me she was a friend, teacher, and mentor, challenging me to do better, still working on that. I read the announcement on Wednesday in England with sadness. I am one of many whose life was profoundly changed by her actions as much as her words. That is a debt I can never repay, so all I can do is try my best to pass on the encouragement I received from her. My prayer is along with the sadness you can remember with thanks giving her life, work, and play and the bubbling enthusiasm she so freely shared.

  23. As young U of C students together in 1967, who would have foreseen that crazy, party-going Margo would have gone on to such heights in the world of academia? As part of “the Group” she was always the one leading us to the fun part of student life. When we rekindled our friendship at our “Group Reunion” I enjoyed seeing that she had not let the world change her one bit. I am so sorry we did not keep in touch, but I am glad to see how she enriched people’s lives as a teacher and a student. And you know, the Margo I knew might actually have enjoyed the notoriety of being ‘the first’ to pass away from H1N1, getting her picture in the paper, and, one last time, serving as a bad example. God bless you Meg.

  25. To The Scheeler Family,
Margo was my introduction to Weekend University when I returned to college in my mid 40’s and WU was in it’s infancy. At first, she was an inspiring teacher and made me see what I was capable of. She then became a friend and we shared many of life’s ups and downs. I will miss her always and never forget my “captain”.

  26. Susanne Cardwell :

Margo not only was a professor who inspired me to create the most artistic works of my life, but also was a dear friend and confidante.

Her influence in my life cannot be understated. Margo encouraged my dreams with such fervor that I was able to pursue and realize a number of my most critical goals. Margo also instilled–and continues to instill–within me the desire to pursue the type of life she led, one selflessly devoted to the service of others.

Furthermore, Margo constantly nurtured my dreams, even going out of her way to provide me with a book on teaching once she learned of my interest in the profession. She was always filled with encouragement.

Indeed, Margo worked selflessly in her academic career, demonstrating not only exemplary pedagogy and leadership, but also true camaraderie with all whom she taught.

In both my life and the lives of many others, Margo continues to inspire, to motivate, and to endear. She will always be a guardian angel . . .

We love you Margo! (And I hope you meet St. Catherine of Sienna in heaven, as I believe you will!)

I was her office-mate at the Calgary Family Therapy Centre where she was completing her practicum this year. I feel honoured to have worked beside Margo and to have learned from her, both professionally and personally.

I have missed her every day since she went into the hospital – I missed her smile, her laugh, and her smart-ass comments. And I will miss her still.

  35. Dear family of Margo;
Just to share a note that I met Margo in our MSW research class just this passed semester. I AM IN SHOCK TODAY TO SEE HER PICTURE THAT SHE IS NO LONGER AMONG US. She shared her knowledge in our class and her personality shone bright through her knowledge sharing. She was a person who was not afraid to share, explore, learn, and at the same time very down to earth and accepting. I loved her sense of humor! I am glad now I had the privilege to know her. Dear family, hold together with your brave hearts and know that God had a different plan with her.
