HURAS, Michael Joel Davison

April, 2, 1993 – Calgary, AB
August, 29, 2014 – Calgary, AB

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael, beloved son of Loreen and Dan Huras, on August 29, 2014 at the age of 21.

Mike loved sports and grew up snowboarding, playing basketball, football, and golf among many others. He was born and raised in Calgary, and was going in to his fourth year of Business at MRU where he recently made the Dean’s Honors list. Mike was always trying to organize activities and make sure people had fun, and this was reflected in his involvement at MRU. He was one of the founders of the MRU Ski Club, and also ran the MRU recreational flag football league. Mike loved to travel and spend time with his family and friends, and his family will cherish many amazing memories of trips taken together.

Mike was known among friends as a guy who would always be there for you, ready to listen or provide advice, and for having a big heart. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and will forever be in our hearts.

Mike is survived by his loving parents Dan and Loreen Huras; sister Kaitlyn Huras; grandparents Stan and Bette Davison and Anna Mae Huras; his many aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, and beloved dog Lexi.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Calgary Winter Club (4611 14th Street NW.), on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. in the Panorama/ Skyline Room. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Recreation Student Staff Scholarship Fund at MRU (403-440-7700). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Mike Huras, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Offer Condolence for the family of HURAS, Michael Joel Davison

    Dan, Loreen and Kaitlyn,

My sincere condolences to you all. I cannot imagine the pain you are feeling right now.

As I messaged Dan about earlier this week, I played flag football with Mike for three years. My friends and I were a little hesitant to invite Mike to play with us after our initial season together, as we were not sure a young (and fast) guy like Mike would want to play with us slow 30- somethings again, but we soon found out he was all in. He saved our team more than a few times, both on offense and defense, and always with a smile on his face.

I realize that having never met anyone from your family outside of Mike these words may seem distant. I can assure you however, they are not being delivered in that way. Mike was a fantastic guy who was easy to like and easy to get along with. He was unassuming, helpful and easy going. He was 10 years younger than our team and he fit in like a (football) glove.

Walking across a green field. sports bag over his shoulder, black shorts, Eagles hat and smiling. For three years he and I spent Sundays together and I will forever remember him in that way.

I have recently moved to Ottawa and I will not be able to make it on Friday night to the celebration of Mike, but please know my thoughts and prayers will be with you.

  6. Jillian Battison :

    Dear Huras family,

Let me start by saying how heart broken I am over the loss of your brother, son and grandchild. Mike was a very important person in my life. He was one of the first friends I met at Mount Royal and he took me to my first liquor store, as I was only 18 and from BC so I had never been to one. He was the life of every party. He loved getting people together and seeing every one else smile. We shared drinks and laughs together ever since that first day at residence. We also worked at the recreation center at school together, he running the flag football league, and I the ball hockey. Not to mention we played on the same (brutally awful) recreational basketball league. We never won a game, even with Mike on the team who always played with the most heart. He was one of the few who actually knew what they were doing out on the court. You would think that meant that he would get frustrated by us always tripping over our own feet, but he never did. He would be right there laughing with us and at us, and at the end of the game he always gave out high-fives, even though he was perhaps the only one who really deserved it. He was a bit of a star. I don’t know what we will do without him now.

Mike was also an excellent listener and I think that was always one of his greatest strengths and one of the things that made me love him. He always seemed to care, even if my problems were petty, he was there listening with his arm around my shoulder. There were several times when I would get upset or restless about something at 3am and couldn’t sleep so I’d send Mike a text and he usually replied right away. He was always a night owl and I counted on that. On those nights we would either talk it out through texts, meet up and go for a walk together, or he’d come to my house and just lay with me and watch a movie until we drifted off to sleep. I would do the same for him and since I didn’t have a car, if he needed a friend he would order a cab for me and then pay for it once I got to his house. He was so special and thoughtful.

I wrote a message on his Facebook wall about this but in case it gets lost in the stream of heart-felt messages from all the lives Mike touched, I would like to tell you a short story again here, just so you can hear once again what an amazing friend your son was.

In February 2012 I was staying with a friend at her cabin near Invermere and she had invited other people that I didn’t know up there. We had fun in the beginning but then I got kind of sick and my mood took a dive. I really just wanted to go home. Mike had also been in Invermere that weekend so he offered me a ride back to Calgary. I refused at first because I was counting on a mood change and didn’t want to leave my friend alone at her place. However, the day after Mike arrived back in Calgary, I messaged him and told him I regretted not going with him because my condition hadn’t improved. He promptly offered to come all the way back to Invermere and pick me up. At first I refused but he insisted and claimed he would love to have me back as well so we could talk with each other and catch up on the ride home. We were always looking out for each other.
Eventually (after little resistance on my part), I relented and let Mike drive all the way back to Inveremere, just to turn around and go back to Calgary once again. It was amazing. I couldn’t believe he would do that for me. Sure enough, he came that afternoon, picked me up right from the ski hill and took me home in a snow storm, in the dark. It was crazy and I can’t think of one single other friend who would so selflessly do that for me, or really for anyone for that matter.

Mike was an incredible person and a friend. I loved him dearly and I am so sorry for your loss. I only had 3 years with him and it wasn’t nearly enough. I imagine 21 years with him wasn’t enough either. No amount of time would have been enough with him, he was so special. I will carry Mike’s memory with me forever in order to keep that missing piece that belongs in my life, in all our lives, from ever drifting away too far.

    Jillian Battison

I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for you. I saw Michael grow so much over the last few years. When I think about him I think about his kindness and positive attitude. He was so polite and respectful. I always enjoyed talking with him. Smart, kind, helpful, respectful, determined, courageous are all qualities I saw in him and what I will remember him for. I also think he was so lucky to have you for parents. You helped him so much to grow into that wonderful person we will remember. You are such a great mom and dad!

  35. There are no words that can describe the sorrow you must be feeling. The emptiness of a parent losing a child, that is not how it is supposed to go! We are supposed to grow old and watch our children build the life they were meant to create. I am so sorry Michael’s life was cut short and he will not have the opportunity to finish his ‘life picture’. It is with a heavy heart, shock and sadness that I learn of the premature loss of your beloved son Michael. I remember Kaitlyn so proudly showing off her “new” baby brother to our son Stephen so many years ago. In reading the number of condolences written above I also learn of the remarkable, generous and personable person he grew to be. I hope that it is those memories that will help you pass through the emotional upheaval you must be feeling these days and those days yet to come. Our thoughts are with you.
Hugs from Janice, Roy, Jessica & Stephen

We just found out today of Michael’s passing. There are no words to express the loss of a child. May the 21 years of memories bring you comfort in knowing that you were the best parents and sister that Michael could ever have had. I will treasure the memories of our boys at your chalet screaming at the top of their lungs to hold on to the water rafts as you drive the
boat in the mountains. The water was cold but their laughter was a little piece of heaven.

    God bless
Love Cindy Perry Bryce and Jessica
