HUGHES, Brian Laing

August 5, 1938 – Cereal, Alberta
September 26, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Brian Hughes, beloved husband of June, of Calgary passed away from heart failure on September 26, 2014 at the age of 76 years.

Brian was a generous, passionate and honest man. He loved nothing more than to contribute to the well being of others – specifically spending time with his three children and his seven grandchildren. He took enormous joy watching them grow, learn and work hard. He never missed any volleyball, football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey or lacrosse games. He went to any kind of practice he could watch, (sometimes just to watch kids who weren’t even related to him). He was at every piano and dance recital, including the impromptu ones in the living room. He always made time to travel out of town for his children’s or grandchildren’s tournaments. All of his grandkids looked forward to report cards, to get Grampa’s reward for a job well done.

Brian was a dedicated volunteer for numerous community associations, hockey/sports programs and political groups. He was also deeply involved in many varied business ventures and opportunities. He will be remembered for making things better for his family, friends, community and all kids. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, including his 4 grand dogs.

Besides his wife, June, of 51 years, Brian is survived by his children Trevor (Candace) Hughes, David (Maureen) Hughes, and Tracy (Craig) Dickie, all of Calgary; his grandchildren Kennedy and Parker Hughes, Owen and Nick Hughes, and Alexis, Sean and Amy Dickie, all of Calgary; and his brother Neville Hughes of Coronation, AB. He was predeceased by his mother Doris, father A.B.(Arthur), brothers Art, Bill and John Hughes.

Grampa was most comfortable helping others, rather than receiving. In this light, in lieu of sending flowers, please make a donation to your local community rink, studio or children’s program in the name of Grampa Brian Hughes.

A Celebration of Brian’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Brian Hughes, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Personally, I have great memories of your Dad. Whether it be at our minor hockey games and the passion he had for all of the kids on the ice or him just welcoming me into your homes in Varsity. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

June and family: Many years ago I worked with Brian at the H+H. He was an orderly at the time and I was an RN. He was the best guy and so much fun. He was always so cheerful and had such a great laugh. I lost track of him over the years. I do want to express my sincere sympathy to you and your family re his passing. I often wondered about him and can imagine he was the best of grandfathers. God bless.

  6. Dear Dave, Mrs. Hughes and rest of the family,
Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your Dad (“Mr. Hughes”). He was an inspiration to all of us. I can vividly remember all of the hockey stats he did for us growing up through our Varsity minor hockey years………. and as you would know we would look at only 3 stat columns: Goals, Assists and Points! However your Dad had 10 other columns in which we had no idea what they meant? ………but the sheet looked very impressive otherwise! Our thoughts and support are with you and your family. Love you all.

    To the Hughes Family,
I would like to offer you my sincerest condolences. It was many years ago when I first had the opportunity to meet Brian when I had the opportunity to coach and work with Dave. Brian was the perfect parent to work with. he was always there when we needed help or support and he was truly a proud parent watching his children playing sports. Brian had a very outgoing personality. He was always there with a smile and a kind word. Though the years have quickly passed by I will always remember him. You are all so lucky to have had him as part of your lives. Thank you.

    June and Family,
We want to add our thoughts to the wonderful tributes paid to Brian this afternoon. How he would have enjoyed such a great get together of his friends–people who thought so much of him!

We worked with Brian in the ’70s as Varsity struggled to become a strong community. He was always a real leader, a hard worker, and a person respected by all.

June, you and Brian have built a wonderful, caring family, so clearly demonstrated by the stories and love for Brian expressed today. We are thinking of all of you.

    To Trevor and Family,
We were so sorry to hear of your loss. We remember seeing Brian at many sporting events, always so friendly, and cheering on the entire team and not just his own grandchildren. He always had a smile and much enthusiasm, whether it was football, rugby or lacrosse. The pride he had for all of his grandkids and their various activities was evident.

    With deepest sympathy,
    The Sceviour Family
