May 25, 1920 – June 24, 2012
Allen (Shorty) Huber of Calgary passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the age of 92 years.
Allen loved the outdoors and was a hunter and avid gardener. He found his greatest joy when fishing. Some of his favourite times were spent near the Belly River with life-long friends, including Bernie and Marge Charles. He and his dear friend Jenny continued on with fishing expeditions until he reached the age of ninety.
Allen was a colourful character and will be remembered for his generosity with those he loved, his annual Stampede pancake breakfast, his strong will, tenacity, and boundless energy. Until the end, he willed himself to keep moving and interacting with the outside world despite his ever increasing physical limitations. Allen readily made friends and enjoyed visiting. For many years he was a regular at Friends Cappuccino Bar where Margie, the owner, always welcomed him warmly.
Allen is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sylvia Huber; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Huber and Dan McKinnon and Cathy and Malcolm Fry; six grandchildren, Greg Huber (Yulia Rudko), Shannon (Stephane) Collard, Naseem Jarjoura (Alisa Smith), Ben McMullan, Sarah and Elise Mathison; four great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Alexander Collard, Zefi and Janey Jarjoura. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law Doreen and Peter Laba; brother and sister-in-law George and June Huber; his loving companion Jenny Declercq; numerous nieces and nephews; and his ‘adopted’ family Darlene, Brent, Lauren, and Jordan Cooper.
Allen was predeceased by his wife Lavina in 1996; two brothers Reuben and Archie and a sister Alice, and son-in-law Rick Mathison. He held a special place in his heart for his mother Mary and laid flowers on her grave for over 70 years. Now they are together again.
A gathering to celebrate Allen’s life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If desired, memorial donations can be made directly to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, www.natureconservancy.ca Telephone: 1-800-465-8005.
