Magdalena Veronika Horvath of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2013 after a short courageous battle with cancer at the age of 75 years.
Magdalena was one of fifteen children and was born in Hungary and raised in Germany. Magdalena married the love of her life Gyula “Joe” Horvath in 1955 and together they immigrated to Canada with their son Wolfgang in 1957. They started their Canadian life in Quebec and through the years lived and worked in many provinces. Magdalena along with her husband and son became Canadian citizens on May 22, 1975, a moment she was very proud of and valued. Magdalena was a very caring, loving person who reached out to help and support many throughout her journeys. While moving through Canada, Magdalena gave birth to daughter Monika in Toronto, and four years later, daughter Veronika in Nanaimo.
Magdalena retired in 2003 from the University of Calgary Housing. After retirement she always needed to keep herself physically and mentally alert. She began working for CBE lunch room programs, which lead to her assisting children with their reading skills. As English was her third language, she was quite proud of herself and all the children she supported.
Magdalena is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Wolfgang and Holly and their children Mallorie (James) Linthorne and Cody; two daughters and a son-in-law, Monika Lindsay and her children Trevor, Evan, Sara; Veronika and James Work and their children Cody, Mykayla and Brandon. She is also survived by family in Europe. Magdalena was predeceased by her husband Gyula “Joe” in 2006.
