HORNIACHEK, Margaret “Marge” Rose (nee Peppler)

August 8, 1941 – Kamsack, Saskatchewan
January 22, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Margaret “Marge” Rose Horniachek of Calgary, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away while surrounded by the love of her family on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the age of 73 years. Marge was born in Kamsack, SK on August 8, 1941.

Marge met and married her husband Dave in Regina, SK shortly before moving to Saskatoon, where they welcomed daughter Leslee into the world. Dave’s job brought them to Calgary, where they had son Robin. She worked in a few jobs over the years as an office administrator before retiring in 2000.

Marge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, shortly before Dave was also diagnosed with cancer. They would attend treatments together and became closer friends during this time. At this time, Marge caught the golf bug that Dave had for years and they spent much of their time at Willow Park golf course together. When Dave passed in 2004, golf and social life at Willow Park became Marge’s new passion – she would often volunteer for events and committees and could rarely be found away from the golf course during the summer months.

Marge had a wonderful ability to create meaningful and lasting relationships with anyone who came into her life. She wasn’t ‘just a friend’ to so many people, and for her, her friends were her family. She would go out of her way to do anything for anyone. She made sure everyone felt her love, and would always hold people close to her heart. She loved to entertain, and would often go over the top in preparations to have friends and family over for dinner.

Mom will be very sadly missed by many heartbroken friends and family.

She is survived by daughter Leslee (Doug) Paterson and son Rob (Sheri). Marge will also be greatly missed by her cherished grandchildren and loves of her life, Kennedy, Jordan and Makena. She was predeceased by her parents Amelia and Jacob; brothers Edward and Donald; sisters Evelyne and Sandra; niece Meryl and nephew Joe; and husband of thirty-eight years, Dave.

One of mom’s greatest gifts was her ability to make people feel special and loved, and in this manner A Celebration of Marge’s Life will be held at Willow Park Golf and Country Club (639 Willow Park Drive S.E.) on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 2:00 pm. We would be honoured if friends and family wish to share stories and tributes with us at that time. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Prairies/NWT Chapter, 700, 10665 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton AB T5J 3S9 Telephone: (780) 452-1166. www.cbcf.org/prairiesnwt. The family would like to acknowledge the efforts of the staff of the CICU at Foothills Medical Centre.

In living memory of Marge Horniachek, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  5. Gladys Erdelyan :

To her family – I was so sorry to hear of Marge’s sudden passing, she will be missed. I remember being at Dave’s (my husband Johnny’s nephew) memorial service at the Golf Club. I just found the short speech I had written to be read, it was tough as I had just lost Johnny on April 18, 2004 after 60 years. Another nephew and Dave’s cousin – Richard Hegion all passed with in a very short time. We use to say “they are playing ball and having a great time up in heaven!”
    With deepest sympathy to all,
    Aunty Gladys.

  12. Marilyn Kennedy :

It just won’t be the same at Willow Park, rounding the corner to retrieve my clubs from the back shop and not seeing Marge , anxious to start her day on the golf course, greeting golfers as they arrive with her smile and comment of one sort or another (hardly ever sarcastic)! She will be sorely missed. Unfortunately, I am out of the country in Asia until after the memorial. Sincere condolences.

    Leslee, Rob and family,
We are very sorry to hear of the loss of your mother & grandma, Marge. We were very lucky to have been Marge’s neighbour for the last 20 years. We shared many stories, laughs, hugs and renovation projects over these years. Marge was such a great neighbour and we will be eternally grateful for her kindness to us, especially six months ago when our son passed away and she delivered a cooked turkey to us. Everytime we look next door we will think of Marge and Dave with a smile.

  17. Marge reached out to those less fortunate this last christmas, donating gift cards to an agency in her community that supports families and children. They wouldn’t otherwise have been able to afford gifts and food. I met her briefly but was touched by her generosity.

  19. Carol (Horne) Tataryn :

Dear Leslee and Robin, You don’t know me, but I am a cousin of your dad’s. We grew up near to each other on the farm. Our fathers were brothers. My dad was George. Unfortunately I did not have the privilege of getting to know your mother although we met at your grandparents 50th anniversary in Regina. We may never meet but I want you to know that I am very sorry for your loss. Your mom was still young. I will soon be 72 and so 73 is young! God bless and comfort you. With love, Carol

  20. Lisa Walsh-Brost :

    Hi there,
My name is Lisa. I am the owner of Prestige Pop-Up Sprinklers. One of our technicians was recently out to your Mom’s place to get the system going and this is when I learned that Marge has passed on. Our family is so sorry for your loss. We all remember Marge very fondly! She has been a customer with our company for over 15 years and we have all had the pleasure of a morning or afternoon chat as we worked on her sprinklers. She was one of my favourite customers to spend time with chatting – often as she was in a hurry to go off to the golf course.
We will miss her smiley face and friendly banter…Lisa Walsh-Brost
