HOOKER, Erma “Irma” (nee Naffin)

March 7, 1929 – Delia, AB
December 12, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Irma Hooker passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 12, 2013. She was an incredible woman, that Irma. Irma had a heart of gold with indestructible strength and spirit. Family was always first in Irma’s life; she was the glue that held everyone together. Irma also loved animals and had an amazing way with them. Some people just leave an indelible mark on your life, and she was one.

Born at home on the farm in the Delia area 84 years ago, she was the eldest of 8 children to Rudolf and Klara Naffin. Irma was raised on the farm before moving into Drumheller for high school where she met her loving husband of 61 years, Don. Irma and Don were married in Drumheller in 1952 and then moved to Calgary. Irma worked for The Bank of Commerce (now CIBC) and Bank of Montreal (now BMO) for a number of years.

She enjoyed the outdoors, camping on “The Bench” at Waiparous and Thanksgiving at McLean Creek as well as gardening. Irma fought a brave 20 plus year battle with heart disease and degenerative disc disease. She was able to spend her last days at home, surrounded by the everlasting love of husband Don and faithful pussycat Mouser.

Besides her loving husband Don, Irma is also survived by her children Brian (Deb) Hooker, Joanne (Bill) Stone; grandchildren Deven, Dustin, Dan and Meghan; sisters and brothers Lilly (Jens) Skov, Harold (Shirley) Naffin, Hilda Doig, Margaret (Rick) Peterson, Albert (Terry) Naffin, Linda (Gary) Charlton and sister-in-law Winne Mae (Ed) Jackson and numerous nieces and nephews. Irma was predeceased by her parents Rudy and Klara Naffin, and sister Freda Epp (Utley).

A Celebration of Irma’s amazing life, for family and close friends, will be held early in 2014. In memory of Irma, a donation would be gratefully accepted by The Calgary Humane Society, (403)205-4455, www.calgaryhumane.ca, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mhfh.com.

In living memory of Irma Hooker, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

I always will have many fond memories of Irma, her laughter, smile, and sense of humor. She was a great big sister to my mother and always a presence in her life. I am grateful to have had Irma in my life, and will never forget her. May the Grace of God comfort Don, Brian, and Joanne and give them courage and stength during these days.
