HOLE, Linda Lee

February 20, 1962, Medicine Hat, Alberta
January 29, 2015, Calgary, Alberta

Writing my own obituary has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. My family moved to Calgary when I was only 3 years old. I graduated from Crescent Heights High School (1980) and later graduated from SAIT. When I took ill, I worked for the Wellhead Division of Weatherford, where my boss, Craig Fisher, has been amazing to me, especially since being diagnosed with esophageal cancer in September of 2013. Definitely a shock!

I have been fortunate to have taken vacations travelling to China, Japan, Malaysia, and also Katmandu, Nepal. I climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan, and even hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! The hobby I have enjoyed the most is genealogy. I have travelled to various places in Canada, United States, Sweden, Norway, France, Denmark, England and Wales meeting distant relatives and friends. I have been a member of the Alberta Family History Society for many years. After years of working on my family tree, and collecting obituaries for research since the age of 13, it’s kind of ironic that I would be writing my own obituary.

The best thing that ever happened to me was when I became a mom to my daughters. They have been my greatest joy and my proudest achievement and I love them more than anything. I was always involved in their activities whether it was baseball, being a guide leader, taking them to their dance classes, drama plays, and all things a proud mom would do. Many years later, I still get together with the other guide leaders to play cards on a regular basis. My friends and family and special neighbors (Richard and Trish) have been so supportive to me during this time and I am so forever grateful. A special thank you to my mom for taking such good care of me, and to my friend, Cindy Ralston for everything she has done.

I am survived by my daughters, Laura and Nancy Gammack, my dad, Ken Hole (Mary Stone), my mom, Sonya Johnson, my brother, Ken Hole (Maria), my sister, Valarie Hellwig (Scott) and their children, Jesse and Jennifer. Last but not least, my dearly devoted dog, Oreo.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, if wished, donations in Linda’s name may be made to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, (1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2).

In living memory of Linda Hole, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. I was so fortunate to get to know Linda through Brownies and Guides when our girls were young, and in the last several years at our regular card games with other past leaders. She was amazing through this most difficult time since her diagnosis – my thoughts are with her daughters and family.

  2. Although I never even met Linda, a distant relative on my mother Gertrude Dube Bacon’s side I feel like I knew her thanks to FB. Linda and her Mom visited my mom in Berlin NH two years ago as they were traveling around visiting family around the country. Mom was so excited to have them go all the way to Berlin, NH to visit her. The last family contact with that part of the family was many many years ago when Mom’s dad and mom, Antoine and Alphonsine Dube, drove out to Canada to visit Antoine’s brother and family. It wasn’t until after Linda’s visit did we find out that she was very sick and through FB and e-mail, Mom and I were able to keep in touch with Linda. Obviously I did not know just how ill she was because I was so saddened when I received her e-mail last week talking about her bad news from the doctors and then soon after her message containing her own obituary. It does seem that Linda had a full life doing things she wanted to do and had a close and loving relationship with her daughters, mom and close friends. It is such a difficult thing to have someone like Linda be taken away so young. My thoughts and prayers are with Laura and Nancy and especially with her mom and dad. It must be so difficult on everyone. We unexpectedly lost our mom a few weeks ago at age 89 and I am thankful that she was called home before hearing about Linda, because it would have been very difficult for her to accept why someone so young was taken. So Laura and Nancy, please know that Your Mom and grandmother’s visit to my mom was very much appreciated and she so loved communicating with her through FB. If you guys ever make it out to this part of the country please feel free to look us up.

Finally let me sign off as Mom always did when in FB,

    Love You All

  3. My deepest sympathies to Laura, Nancy and the rest of the family at this time of sorrow. Even though we lost contact with each other over the past 20 years. We kept in close touch over the last year since we connected again. We talked over the phone and by text, but we finally got together for lunch on Jan 22 and that was so much fun. It was like we had never lost touch with each other. I will always keep that 3 hour lunch forever in my heart. I’m glad I got to see her one more time. Linda you will always be in my heart and never forgotten. Rest in peace now.

  5. Kerstin och Egon Pedersen :

Dear Laura, Nancy and Sonya. We are so sorry that Linda has passed away. Just a week ago, we talked on Skype and she was looking so good and alive and we talked about your trip to Sweden and my (Kerstin’s) trip to Canada about nearly 6 years ago. It was hard to believe when she told me that she had just a couple of months left. She got hardly one week after that talk. Too young and you girls are too young not to have a loving mother. I know she loved you very much.
And Sonya we are thinking a lot of you.
But we know that Linda doesn’t suffer any longer.
Our Condolences to all of you
    Kerstin och Egon

  8. My deepest sympathies to Laura, Nancy, Sonya and Family.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.
I spent many happy times with Linda before, and then after Laura and Nancy were born. Her girls were her life, her devotion to them unyielding, but she still was full of thoughtfulness and smiles for everyone right to the very last.
Thank you Linda, it has been an honor and a pleasure to be part of your life.
    I will miss you.

  10. Pat & Karen Kennedy :

Having known Linda for 35 years it was amazing to see her tackle and overcome many life challenges. She had become a special friend to my wife and I even with the inconsistent communication we shared. In the summer last year she asked if we could get together again which always seemed to be a challenge with all our schedules and different locations we lived in. She had an agenda which was to discuss her illness in person and get pictures of all of us including her daughters together for historic reasons. Linda explained in detail what she would be enduring for the next few months, my wife a nurse expanded on the details. We stayed in touch following her progression of treatments and were on the way to see her the day she passed. Linda had supported me 30+ years ago when my mother had gone through very similar health challenges and passed at age 52. Linda spent a lifetime building her legacy as the unique and modest person which the tributes and people around her stated. Within her legacy are the two daughters she mothered and mentored into the wonderful women they have now become. She leaves a lifetime of family research which she combined with fantastic trips and life experiences to be shared by the existing family. She leaves behind a group of friends from all over the world who she never asked for anything but friendship and information. Thank you Laura & Nancy, Sonya, Kenny, Val & Scotty and the rest of the family for giving us the opportunity to say good bye to Linda (Lucky Lee) a lifetime friend. Please accept our condolences sincerely,
    Pat & Karen Kennedy
