HOGGARD – Shirley Smith (nee Oakenfold)

December 28, 1928 – January 15, 2011

Shirley, a beautiful, generous and gentle soul passed away peacefully on January 15, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She is survived by her husband John; children Graham (Rhonda) Hoggard, Carol (Rob) Craig and grandchildren Hailey, Emily, Lucas, Logan and Katelyn. Shirley was born in Young, SK. She grew up in Weldon, SK and juggled school and helping out in the family cafe, where she perfected her famous pies. She left for the adventure of the big city, arriving and staying in Calgary where she met and married John. John and Shirley were married for forty-five years and enjoyed raising their family together. Shirley loved to garden, play bridge, visit with neighbours, and all activities that involved her family, like hiking and camping. She made lasting friendships in all walks of life, and she will be remembered most for her gracious skill of making all around her feel welcomed and important. Shirley was as devoted as a wife could be to John, and as Shirley’s health declined John in turn devoted each and every day to feeding and caring for his wife. Shirley was predeceased by her sister Adele (George) Leonard and her sister Leora Oakenfold, her mother Vivian (Smith) Oakenfold, her stepmother Alice (Pederson) Oakenfold and her father Alfred “Mick” Oakenfold.

  3. John, Graham, and Carol,

    I am sorry to hear of the passing of your dear wife and mother. My abiding childhood memory of Shirley is her taking Graham and me to the park and pushing us higher on the swings than any other adult ever dared! Such a kind, friendly person she was.

    My thoughts are with you in this difficult time.

    John, Carol, Graham;

    Shirley was such a wonderful person to know. I found her to be quite kind and a delight. She was a brave woman to take on Alzheimer’s as this disease takes vibrant people, people like my mom. My deepest condolences to John and our families.

    Kind regards.
