May 4, 1917 – July 10, 2012
Evelyn passed peacefully from her courageous life journey on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the age of 95 years.
A native Calgarian, Evelyn was a member of the Molyneux clan, a well known family in the Ramsay area. Her life was a gift to all who knew her… brothers, sisters, friends and especially to her children, Bob and Wendie, and later their extended families. Her courage was tested early in life when at age twenty eight her husband and love of her life, Bob, a WWII bomber pilot, was killed in a plane crash. Shortly thereafter Evelyn spent two years away from her home and children, battling and defeating tuberculosis. Upon leaving hospital she emerged with renewed determination and dedication to the sole task of raising her two children. Evelyn’s strong sense of family, intelligence and sense of humour persisted throughout her life. Her profound strength of character and determination continue to inspire her remaining family and friends. A talented cook, baker, writer and artist Evelyn was also an accomplished seamstress. After raising her family she worked at the Glenbow Foundation and attended a course on textile restoration and conservation at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. She specialized in restoration of clothing from the Victorian era and shared her knowledge with her colleagues at the Glenbow. Later, in her 80’s, Evelyn took on the computer challenge and particularly enjoyed the magic of email.
Evelyn is survived by her two children, Bob (Pat) Hodge and Wendie (Tom) Ryder; grandchildren Rob (Gundi) Hodge, Jenny (Ken) Plaquin, Dan (Zena) Ryder as well as eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Evelyn is also survived by her sisters-in-law June and Shirley as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband Bob, Evelyn was pre-deceased by her brother Bill (1947), her brother Jack (1954), sister Claribel (1964) and brothers Roy (1996) and Jim (2008).
The family extends special thanks to her loyal and loving caregivers Dory and Denise as well as to Nicky and the kind and caring staff at Bow View Manor. A family gathering to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held later this summer. Evelyn’s ashes will be interred with her beloved husband Bob in the Field of Honour at Burnsland Cemetery – together at last. If friends so desire donations in memory of Evelyn may be made to The Brenda Strafford Foundation, 4628 Montgomery Boulevard NW, Calgary AB T3B 0K7 or to a charity of one’s choice.
