HNATIUK, John

January 5, 1931 – April 13, 2012

It is with profound sadness John’s family announces his passing on Friday, April 13th in his 82nd year. Born in Medicine Hat to Melania and Mykyta Hnatiuk, he grew up in Chancellor, Alberta.

John is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Gwendolyn; their children Bryan (Yvonne), Kathy (Stace Royal), Owen (Wendy), and his treasured grandchildren Keaton, Kayla, Holly and Andrew, whom became the light of his life. Additionally survived by brother Ken, and sisters Mary Clarke, Helen Hvengaard, Rose Cousins and their respective families whom regarded John as the rock of the family.

John began his career teaching, at a small country school near Hussar, Alberta prior to attending the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated in 1958 with many awards including Outstanding Engineer of the year. His career as a Petroleum Engineer was marked with numerous awards and publications including a “Life Member” award from APEGGA, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Award, “Who’s, Who Alberta” and “Distinguished Lecturer” award from the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. In his 34-year career with Gulf (now Conoco) he had several Petroleum Engineering roles that included pioneer engineering in the Beaufort Sea and sea ice management contributing to Canada’s ability to explore for offshore oil and gas in the region. Armed with energy and a passion for Engineering, he consulted for several companies following his retirement from Gulf in 1986.

John’s work expertise took him around the world that nourished his passion for travel. Highlights included: Russia, Ukraine, China, Kenya, Ecuador and both the Arctic and Antarctic. Though John explored the world; his favorite destinations were Mesa, Arizona and at the cottage at Kananaskis Lake with family.

John instilled a passion for learning, hard work, love of travel and the outdoors to his family. As a father he encouraged discovery and fostered our passions with time, energy and encouragement. John lovingly supported his true love Gwen and knew she and his family were his true measure of success.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, (1611 St. Andrew’s Place N.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Private interment. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In memory of John, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

    Dear Gwen:
We offer you and yours our heartfelt condolences. To say John’s life was well lived is an understatement. I have never met a man so grounded to life at home and at work. From modest beginnings to do great things, always in a very modest way.
He will be missed, I find it difficult to believe he is gone. Rest in Peace John, a rest truly earned.
