HLAVACEK, Martin

October 28, 1950 – Bratislava, Slovakia
July 22, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Martin Hlavacek, beloved husband, father and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 22nd at the age of 63 years.

Martin’s adventurous spirit was evident throughout his life. His first move was in 1968 as a student fleeing Communist Czechoslovakia. He settled in a village near St. Albans, England, where he began his new life. His next venture took him to Toronto, Canada where he met his future wife Lilia.

After the birth of his daughters, road trips to Kananaskis with dogs Sammie and Teddy were a favourite pastime. As of late, Martin completed several travel goals, including vacations to Nova Scotia, the Azures, and Rome. Last June, Martin was even able to visit the homestead of his favourite Icelandic poet, Stephan G. Stephansson, in Markerville, Alberta.

Martin’s example to all of us was to keep our sense of wonder in all things. His example will be remembered always.

Martin will be dearly missed by his wife Lilia; and his children, Theresa, Jessica and Paul.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive N.E) on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Catholic Church (15 Templebow Road N.E.) on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery (Erlton Street and 32nd Ave. S.W.). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Condolence Messages

  1. George Bowden :

    I am colleague of Martin.

Sad, very sad. Such a nice kind gentle individual.

As volunteers in the old days of telephone modems (1200 and 2400 baud) we took some obsolete TAU equipment to the Slovak and Czech republic and set up bulletin boards for folks. Days of the iron curtain when western equipment was in demand.

Enjoyed working and chatting with him.

    Sadly missed.

  2. David & Nancy Harper :

    Lilia, Jessica, Theresa:

Nancy and I were truly saddened by the news, regarding Martin’s health and passing.

I am glad that Martin and I had an opportunity to spend sometime together during his visit to Ottawa. It gave us an opportunity, to return to the days when both our families lived in Stony Plain, and he also spoke at length, of the international travel, you enjoyed as a family. You can rest assured, that the three of you, meant everything to Martin and you were truly loved.

I also showed Martin the Print, of his home town, in Bratislava, which he gave me when were tranferred to Ottawa. I later had the same framed, and it still hangs in our home, as a reminder of our friendship. Before leaving for the airport the following day, Martin surprised me, by presenting me with, a cap badge from the Czech Police Department, both of which, will be deeply cherished.

Martin was a; quiet, patient and understanding man, who I admired and was proud to call, a Friend.

We would like to extend our deepest and most sincere sympathies for your loss.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Dave & Nancy
