HISCOCK, John Ellis (Jack)

September 15, 1931 – North Sydney, Nova Scotia
January 5, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Hiscock, beloved husband of Edith Colter Hiscock (nee MacDonald), at the Foothills Medical Center in Calgary on January 5, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 86. He was surrounded by his family.

Jack was born the ninth of twelve children to John and Olive Hiscock in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. A true adventurer, he left Cape Breton in 1951 to join the RCMP in Regina. He enjoyed a long career that took him to many destinations across Canada. He retired as a Staff Sergeant in Yellowknife in 1979. Jack married the love of his life, Edie MacDonald, in Ottawa in 1962. They recently celebrated fifty-five years of marriage.

Besides his loving wife Edie, Jack is survived by his children Patricia (Malcolm), Jennifer, Ron (Carla), Jacqueline (Tim), Carrie (John) and grandchildren Lauren, Andrew, Courtnay, Kellen, Andrea, Mitchell, Rachael, Aidan and Darragh, and by his sisters Kathleen, Olive, Adeline, Etta and Joyce.

At Jack’s request, no service will be held. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place in the spring, at a time and venue to be announced. Graveside service to follow at Waterside, Nova Scotia in the summer of 2018. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 Telephone: (403) 205-3966, email donorservices@cancer.ab.ca or to Calgary Health Trust, Suite 800, 11012 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary, AB T2J 6A5, Telephone: (403)943-0615, www.thetrust.ca.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. Desiree Hao, the entire palliative care team at the Foothills Medical Centre, and to the entire staff of Unit 47 and 46 of the Foothills.

Condolence Messages

  1. Jack was truly one of the best person I’ve had the pleasure of calling a close friend. I have many fond memories during our time in Yellowknife, hunting and fishing trips, many many TGIF at Jack and Eddie’s Home, many New Year’s Eves that poured into breakfast. Several road trips on the Mackenzie highway listening to his experiences in the RCMP (some hilarious) and later great visits in Kelowna and Calgary. Jack was a great influence on my perspective on life… he had a quiet gift that way. I am proud that Jack was my friend.
May I offer to Edie and her family my heartfelt condolences on Jack’s passing.
    Larry Todd, Winnipeg.

  27. My sincere condolences to Edie on the passing of Jack. I worked in the office with Jack at Inuvik and again in Yellowknife. He was a dedicated Member of the Force, a real gentleman, and a pleasure to work alongside. He was always jovial and in my opinion, the best CIB reader. If I had known he was back in Calgary I would have visited him at Foothills Hospital as I live close by.
May you Rest In Peace at last Jack.
