Hill (nee Minions), Helen Gertrude

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Helen Gertrude Hill of Calgary, announces her peaceful passing at the Agapé Hospice on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at the age of 82 years.

Helen was born in Brandon, MB on December 29, 1925, but has lived in Calgary most of her life raising a family on her own. She was a fiercely independent woman who lived on her own in Inglewood until the very end. While in her eighties, Helen could often be found trying to move sidewalk blocks or railway ties in response to another project that she had in mind for her yard. Her friends and relatives will treasure the memories of Helen’s commitment to her children, grandchildren, her wacky sense of humour, crazy hats, her knowledge of every Thrift Store and garage sale in Calgary, and her ability to sew and knit while watching her favourite soaps. Helen worked for the CPR for many years until her retirement.

Helen will be deeply missed by two sons and daughters-in-law, Geoffrey and Ann and Colin and Lisa; daughter Libby; by five grandsons, Joshua, Dylan, Mackenzie, Riley, and Logan; and by her brother Murray Minions of Vancouver, BC. She is also survived by her favourite thrift store shopping buddy and cousin Norma Hamilton of Victoria, BC. Helen was predeceased by her grandson Zachary.

For my mother,

Gentle and generous

She is the strongest woman I know,

And she wields her strength to empower those she loves

To honour Helen’s wishes there will not be a funeral service. Forward condolences through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8, Telephone: 403 – 955-8818.
