HENRY – Russell W.

October 28, 1920 – June 15, 2010

Russell (Russ) William Henry passed away suddenly at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at the age of 89 years.

Russ was born on October 28, 1920 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He loved horses and spent most of his youth as a horseman on the family farm near Tompkins, Saskatchewan. He volunteered for military service during World War II with the Regina Rifles in England, Holland and Germany. At the end of the war, his young family settled in Brooks, Alberta and moved to Calgary in 1948 where he established himself as a well respected carpenter and contractor. In 1959, he was proud to build his current residence and to say that it was the first home built in the then new southwest community of Southwood. Throughout his later years, he maintained a very active lifestyle and enjoyed playing crib with his friends at the legion and every year proudly displaying his new found gardening skills.

Russ is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Rose, his daughters, Joyce Ratcliffe and her children Debby, Jim, Ledale and Sheldon; Peggy and John Van de Pol and their child Kayley; his son Cameron, friend Deb and his family. Russ is also survived by twenty-four great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, special nieces Elaine Kaiser and Melvina Churchill as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.

Russ, the son of Robert and Ethel Henry was the last remaining survivor amongst his parents and seven siblings who predeceased him. Russ will be lovingly remembered by his many relatives and friends as a strong man who lived by his convictions. He lived life to the fullest and left this world as he had always planned; fast and without causing any worry.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Monday, June 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
