Left to be our angel on Tuesday, March 25, 2014.
Harvey Peter Hempel was born to Annie (Lehr) and Jake Hempel on August 1, 1933. Harvey was the eighth child born from this union. He grew up on the farm with his older siblings Edith, Ruby, Dorothy, Neil, and younger siblings Violet and Mervin. Three older siblings have died. We often speak of the fact that after just three days of knowing each other, Jake and Annie were wed April 10, 1921.
Harvey attended all of his school years at the Greenfield School East of Beiseker. There he got into some mischief with Ray and Floyd Berreth, and Donald Haase; these boys would remain lifelong friends. Ray drove Mary to church the day Harvey and Mary were married.
After school, Harvey worked at Ed McNair’s driving gravel truck from 1950-1957. In 1957, he went to work for Darce and Stan Olsen at the Purity 99 Service Station in Beiseker. In 1964, he returned to farming with his brother Neil. In 1966, they moved back to Beiseker and he worked for The Village of Beiseker as the town Foremen until 1969. In 1969, he started managing grain elevators, first with the National Grain Company and it would later become Cargill Grain Company. He would work there until his retirement in 1994.
Harvey cherished his time at the elevator and memories and friendships like those of his staff Donovan and secretaries Sherry and Edith. After retiring, they lived in the Beiseker area for a few years until they relocated to Strathmore in 2007. He loved the country and his home community of Beiseker. It was difficult and with mixed emotions that they left, but, due to health care, and to be near to their daughter, they chose Strathmore as their new home.
Harvey married Mary Kiprick on June 11, 1958. They were blessed with four children; Kevin and Joanne, Keith and Susan, Kathy and s Faron Hermanson, Troy and Jacealyn; grandchildren Stephanie and Joel Baird, Scott, Brett, Chelsea, Joel, Joryn, and Maddyn, great grandchildren Taya and Landon Baird; brothers Neil and Audrey, Mervin and Shirley; sisters Dorothy McNair, Violet Hempel; brother-in-laws Ed and Joan Kiprick, Harold and Brenda Kiprick; sister-in-law Theresa Hagel along with many nieces, nephews, their families, and many loving friends and community members. He was predeceased by five siblings Florence, Lenore, Jacob, Edith Zolmer, Ruby Bessy; parents Jake and Annie; in-laws Joe and Katie Kiprick; several brothers-in-law; and daughter-in law Dilleen Hempel. Harvey loved his family, and, as many have said, was one of the gentlest men you would ever meet.
