HELLOFS – William Alfred James

January 9, 1926 – April 8, 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of William (Bill) Alfred James Hellofs on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the age of 84 years.

We remember Bill for his friendly and gentle nature, sense of humour, and generosity. Bill served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He obtained his Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1950. Bill worked in the oil and gas industry for thirty-seven years with Gulf Canada Resources and was responsible for natural gas marketing. Upon retirement, he was a Natural Gas Consultant for several oil and gas companies, as well as a volunteer with many agencies, such as the Seniors Police Advisory Committee, Calgary Injury Prevention Coalition, Outstanding Calgary Seniors Awards Committee, Calgary Regional Arts Foundation, and the Kerby Centre.

Bill was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his wife of fifty-five years, Irene; his children, Jim (Pat) Hellofs, Drs. Barbara (Bill Astle), Bev (Tim Reid), Scott (Julie) Hellofs, and Sheila (Randy Richardson); his grandchildren, Christine and Nichole Hellofs, Colin Reid, Carmen Astle, and Ethan Hellofs; great-grandchild Connor Hellofs; sister Marjorie (Hellofs) Cowie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

    I was deeply saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. He was a great man. I worked with him at Gulf in the 80’s. We have maintained contact through the years since. I always looked forward to his smile and upbeat view on life at our annual fall lunch. His many words of wisdom and gentle and kind nature will be sorely missed. I was always struck by his warm and encompassing view of family. My thoughts are with you.
