HEIMBACH, Dr. Michael

May 21, 1928 – May 9, 2014

Dr. Michael Heimbach, beloved husband of Diane, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 9, 2014.

Michael was born in Winnipeg, MB on May 21, 1928. He graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1954 and did post-graduate studies at Mount Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He practiced Pediatrics in Regina and then in Calgary for more than 30 years. He touched the lives of countless young patients and their families and many medical students. He retired in 1988.

He was an outdoorsman, true nature lover and was happiest fishing, hunting and hiking in the mountains. In his retirement he enjoyed painting, tennis and sometimes golf, where he developed many enduring friendships. His passion was his family, especially his five grandchildren whom he adored. He had a special way of making people smile. Michael will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, integrity and incredible sense of humor.

Michael was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by Diane, his wife of 58 years, his children, Dr. Catherine Heimbach (Dr. Erv Kimak) of Calgary, Carol Heimbach (Bob Taft) of Oakville, Ontario, and James Heimbach of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lauren and Sean Kimak of Calgary and Michael, Katie and Emily Taft of Oakville and by his brother Joseph Heimbach of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He will be fondly remembered by his sister-in-law, Doreen Fielding (Paul) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, his brother-in-law, Alan Coles (Pat) of Cranbrook, B.C. as well as many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond.

Friends are invited to share memories of Michael at a gathering at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club (west on highway 8, past Elbow Valley) on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The family would like to thank Dr. Dean Ruether and staff, Dr. David Falk, for their kindness during his illness, as well as the wonderful caregivers and nurses from the Palliative Care Team, especially Nishhma and Darcia. Flowers are respectfully declined. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In 1970 I started nursing in the pediatric department at the Foothills.Pediatricians provided a lot of the direct care including starting IV’s. During a busy evening 112 multiple procedures were happening making it very busy place leaving Dr. Heimbach to start an IV almost alone..A nurse checked if he had all the supplies needed asking “Oh and do you have cotton balls?”Dr. Heimbach quickly replied,”Cotton balls….do you think I’m a teddy bear?”

Dear Dr. Heimbach …..fondly remembered for so many things …caring, compassion and cotton balls.

Dear Carol, Bob, Michael, Katie and Emily,
We didn’t know your Dad, father in law or grandpa really well but what stands out is the stories you told us of his visits from Calgary and how amazing he was in playing with Michael, Katie and Emily. Whether it was warding off attacks in the infamous castle or playing street hockey in the driveway there was never any doubt of his fun loving nature and his enduring love for his grandchildren and for all of you.
Our heart goes out to you and we hope the memories will ease some of the sadness and tremendous loss, especially for you Carol at this time.
We especially think of your Mom who will feel the void most profoundly in losing her husband and partner of 58 years. We know you and other family members and friends will be there for her as she begins to adjust her life without him.

    Dear Cathy and family:

So sad to hear of your Dad’s passing. He was a great doc, great teacher, and a great colleague. And he certainly did have a special way of making people smile – even the photo above has that effect! When I last met Mike he offered some advice for the future: “just don’t get old”, then flashed that great smile. I’ll remember both. Sincere condolences to you and your family.
