HEEBNER, Gerald (Gerry) Leroy

March 1, 1931 – Glenbain, Saskatchewan
January 3, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Gerry Heebner of Calgary passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the age of 83 years.

In his early years Gerry was an avid athlete. Gerry was well known in the SWHL as “Ole slippery”, where he was the Captain and scoring leader for the Gull Lake Greyhounds. Baseball was another passion of Gerry’s and he was known for being a big slugger.

Gerry met his life mate Monique (Mickey), and they married in 1955. Gerry took up his first posting with the CP Rail in Morley, AB. The railroad was in his blood and the family moved to numerous locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta where he finished his career in Calgary as a dispatcher.

Gerry enjoyed watching his grandkids play every sport, wherever they might play. He loved watching sports on TV and would seldom miss a game. When Gerry wasn’t telling old stories about his shenanigans with his old buddies, he would be reading his beloved western novels and there was always a “Duster” in his back pocket.

Despite his many medical challenges over the past 20 years, he never showed any sign of weakness nor did he complain. He was as tough as they come!

Gerry is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Gary Epp of Cochrane and Nadine and John David of Vancouver, BC; his son and daughter-in-law Ron and Sherry Reedy of Kingston, ON; six grandchildren, Tyler Epp (Heather), Josh Epp (Brooke), Logan David, Kelly David, Whitney Binnie (Kyle), Jesse Reedy; three great-grandchildren Emma Epp, Lucas Epp, Kaylee Binnie. He is also survived by three sisters Phyllis Hymers, Beverly Mundle (Jim), Lilian Greenslade and their families. Gerry was predeceased by Monique, his wife of fifty-five years, in 2010.

A Celebration of Gerry’s life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Gerry Heebner, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE. Telephone: 403-932-4740.

Condolence Messages

  1. Poppy,

I will always remember our little adventures together; both the road trip to Victoria to visit the David’s and the Costa Rica trip to visit Mom and Dad. I will truly cherish those memories!

Looking back I remember you attending all my baseball/Hockey and football games. I think I can count on one hand the amount of games you missed. Even the -30C football games !

I watched you get older and your health deteriorate and don’t recall you ever complaining about your various ailments. All you would tell me is “Dont get Old”!.

In your later days I loved watching your face light up when one of your great grand children came to visit.

Until we meet agian Old buddy! I hope you are with Nana enjoying a Whiskey or two:)

Thank you for being such a great Grandfather!

  2. Poppy,

Thank you for the love you showed to your entire family. I can second what Josh said about you being at all of our sports games all of the time. We loved seeing you there.

I remember almost rolling our ATV on our trip to Costa Rica and you saying “keep your eyes on the damn road!” Made me laugh!

I am sad that lucas won’t get to grow up with you around but you can be darn sure that he will hear all the stories about you while look at old pictures.

Say hi to Nana for me.
And don’t forget to watch the blue jays on heavens tv!

    Thanks for everything poppy

    I

  7. Art Gordon (AG) :

My condolences to Gerry’s family. You should be proud of him!! I didn’t know GLH for many years like many of you, but it didn’t take much time with Gerry to get to know what a great fellow he was and that he had a pretty darn good sense of humour. It was always a pleasure to spend time with him in our CPR Rules classes and the dispatcher office. He is one of those guys you never forget. Rest in peace Gerry.
