HEDLEY, Harvey Edgar

April 28, 1926 – Minneapolis, Minnesota
June 21, 2014 – High River, AB

Harvey Edgar Hedley of High River, AB, beloved husband of Jean Hedley, died peacefully at the High River Hospital Long-Term Care on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the age of 88.

Harvey grew up on the family farm near Hamiota, MAN., studied social work and education at United College (now the University of Winnipeg), and married Marion Jean (nee Lowry) in 1959. He taught public school in Winnipegosis, Gimli, Roland, Winnipeg, and Peguis First Nation, MAN.; and Black Diamond and Cayley, AB. He specialized in the subjects of social studies and math and took extra interest in supporting children who were at-risk or had learning difficulties. At home he was a loyal and patient father who encouraged his children’s interests in sports, music, and especially their schoolwork. Camping and vacations were highlights of family life and Harvey developed his skills as a house painter and handyman to help run the household. His life was defined by the pursuit of knowledge, his devotion to God, and a desire to promote the common ground between the world’s great religions. As a longtime adherent of the Baha’i Faith, he served four years during his retirement as a volunteer host with the National Baha’i Centre for the Republic of Ireland. He will be remembered by those who knew him, especially his children and grandchildren, for his humble, loving, steady character and his gentle sense of humour.

Besides his loving wife of almost 55 years, Jean, Harvey is survived by his four children David (Leslie), Duncan, Darren (Naghmeh), and Ailsa (Dale), and his grandchildren Cameron, Alison, Sean (Alice), Leila, Vahid, Amelia, Sutherland, Aleta, and Lua. He is also survived by his sisters Wilma (Treloar) and Merle (Tremaine), brothers Raymond and Robert, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved mother Aleta, father Percy, and brothers Norville (Kirk) and Reginald.

Funeral Services will be held at High River United Church (123 Macleod Trail S.W., High River, AB) on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family wishes to thank the staff at the High River Hospital Long-Term Care for the quality of care shown toward Harvey. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the High River District Health Care Foundation Cancer Centre, 560 9th Ave. S.W., High River, AB, T1V 1B3.

In living memory of Harvey, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 Bannister Road S.E. Calgary, AB 1-800-661-1599.

Condolence Messages

  1. Heather Cardin :

On behalf of the entire Nablo clan, and ‘all our relations’, we wish Godspeed to Harvey on his journey, and full hearts to the family as they send him on his way with all the love and prayers possible. There is no real separation of spirits, but I realized, when my mother passed away in August of 2012, that despite the sure comfort of knowing the soul has entered a glorious place, those in the ‘other side camp’ are sorely missed nonetheless. Peace and blessings, love and prayers.

Dearest Ailsa and your cherished family.
Please know my love and prayers are with you. Your father now can watch each one of you from the blessed ‘Abhá Kingdom. It hurts to no longer have the physical future with our Dads and it helps us to cherish what they have taught us in our past, those gems of love that will continue to build our future. There is not a day that goes by that my Dad is present in some form of another: whispered prayer, a voice, a walk, a saying, a bird, his gesture manifested in family. Some days catch you unawares but they too honour our connections. I love & think of our BWC time together. Linda.

Loving greetings Jean to you and all your family. We were sorry to hear of the passing of Harvey. He was such a sweet soul; I always hold him close to my heart and remember often
his kind and supportive spirit. The many events in Alberta, some at your home, and my visit to Ireland when you were both serving there are alive in my memory. There can be no doubt that all the Friends who knew him such as Angus and who are also in the next world will be taking great delight in welcoming him to the Kingdom on High. With Love and Affection, Don and Barbara Rogers.

Cannot think of you and Harvey – and it’s always you both together – without a smile as it is always happy memories, joyous laughter and being welcomed with warmth and love to your home that comes to mind from so many years ago when we were living in Alberta. One cannot express the feelings of happiness and appreciation for the generosity of giving that Harvey and you so well exampled! May he be immersed in light and joy, and may you and your dear family be consoled by your memories of a beloved consort and father who truly served and loved you, allowing others to also benefit from a fountain that overflowed.

  15. Jean and Family;

Love and prayers to all of you at this time of Harv’s passing…

It is so easy to remember the first time we met in Winnipeg – how happy we all were to welcome you as new believers! Then after some years – hellos again and good-byes again at the many functions in the Alberta community where we greeted one another.
Now certainly such very happy and joyous greeting will be amplified as Harv meets those in the next life in a most loving welcome. As is so clearly indicated by Baha’u’llah in the Hidden Words “O SON OF SPIRIT! With the joyful tidings of light I hail thee: rejoice! To the court of holiness I summon thee; abide therein that thou mayest live in peace for evermore”.

  19. Iris Bennett :

    Dearest Jean and Family,
What a wonderful and helpful friend Harvey was! Few had such a full vision of the unity of the Cause of God and acted on it. He made a deep impression on my youngest son, Russell, who would sneak out of Baha’i classes at Sylvan Lake and run off to his trailer (bookmobile) to study and talk. The only teacher he wanted was Mr. Hed-el-lee, as he called him. Russell passed away when he was only 20 years old, and I know he is one happy guy right now because Mr. Hed-el-lee has arrived. Our loss is heaven’s gain. May his powers increase and his strong and kindly spirit keep you warm. Prayers and much love to you all.

  20. Céline Poirier :

    Dear Hedley family,
It is a privilege and an honour to accompany you even in this small way on this last journey of the soul. I did not know Edgar, except through you, his children, Ailsa, Duncan and Darren. I have known your gentleness and compassion, your concern for the well-being of people of every stripe, and your striving for excellence in arts as well as sports. You are well rounded global citizens, and through these traits in you, I have known your father. I pray you may find the strength of spirit in this time of loss to celebrate the victories of this life. He has surely passed on to new opportunities of service.
    With love and prayers,
    Céline Poirier
