HAWKWOOD , Gertrude

September 17, 1923 – March 14, 2013

Gertrude Marie Hawkwood, a long-time resident of Bearspaw and Cochrane, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the age of 89 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Glenda (Jack) Johansen and Kathleen Hawkwood; grandchildren, Calvin and Mark Johansen. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Birchall and numerous loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Mason Hawkwood, sister Lois Hainsworth and her grandson Drew Johansen.

Gertie was born in Thompson, Alberta on September 17, 1923. She moved to Glendale near Cochrane at the age of one and lived in the Cochrane, Calgary and Bearspaw areas all her life. Gertie attended the Cochrane School and Crescent Heights High School in Calgary. In the 1940’s she worked for two and half years at the only Royal Bank of Canada in Calgary at the time. In April 1947 she married Thomas Mason Hawkwood and moved to the farm on Twelve Mile Coulee Road. They operated a purebred Holstein dairy and Hereford farm. Gertie was very hands-on with the operation of their farm. This past August Gertie moved to the Big Hill Lodge in Cochrane and established a new home where she enjoyed her new and old friends. She enjoyed reading many works, both fact and fiction. She loved the music of her time and would often sing the old melodies. Gertie was a community-minded woman. She was a lifetime member of the Bearspaw Women’s Institute, where her skills and talents were brought to the forefront, and she was an active member of the United Church Women. Gertie supported her daughters’ activities – piano lessons, Bearspaw 4-H clubs, Cochrane High School Band and various sports teams. She loved travelling to the beautiful Rocky Mountains with Tom and made the trip many times during their marriage. She also enjoyed holidays with her family to Hawaii, England, Arizona, British Columbia, Ontario, the Maritimes and Alaska. Nothing was more important to Gertie than her family, extended family, friends, community and church. They all brought her great joy.

“This time for me is truly past I have loved you all to the very last Weep for me but courage take And love one another for my sake”

  7. Dorene and Jim Jenkins :

    Dear Glenda and Kathleen:
We were sorry to read that your mom had passed away. She was always interested in our young family and was always concerned about how we were doing. One day she was coming out of the church as I was coming home from the school. She lectured me about working too hard and that I should spend more time with my kids. A great lady. I am sure she has left you many fond memories. Take care. Our best to you and your families.

  14. For the Hawkwood family, Glenda and Kathy and all the Hawkwoods,
I’ve been so sorry to hear the reports that came in rapid succession of Gertie’s illness taking more and more strength from her. Her bright and active participation in so many organizations will be sorely missed. I met Gertie 60 years ag, and she has been a familiar part of my community life all these years. I worked with her in Women’s Institute and always benefited from her knowledge and perspective. I regret that I’m away from home and not able to attend the memorial for Gertie. I would like to have had a chance to speak to so many of my Hawkwood friends. I’ll be thinking of you all today.
    With kind regards, Robin Harvie

  15. Kathy and Glenda,
It’s been a long time since we rode Fran Pederson’s school bus together. And when I think back, my earliest memory of your mom was that I saw her column in the “Bearspaw Glendale Times” and the “Cochrane Times”. I met her a few times at Bearspaw Lions events, or when I brought something to your mom’s home for my mom. I know that our mom’s were close both because of commom interests and proximity and my mom will dearly miss your mom. On behalf of my mom Titia, and siblings David, Ykje and Jacob, and myself I offer our condolences on the passing of your mom.

  16. Jacqueline Vanaalst :

To you all, my thoughts are with you during this time….I did not know you mom personally, however I did know Glenda while I was attending Cochrane High School (1969-1975) – Betty (Wes) was a great friend to my family during this time also. No words can express how we feel losing a loved one – what I do know is that Gertrude was an amazing woman and she will continue to be part of each of you forever. My dad (Nick) passed away in 1994 and my mom (Miep) passed away in 2008. Hold on to your favourite moments, and they will carry you through.

    Glenda, Jack & family,
I am sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. I only heard today. I am sorry I missed her funeral. We used to see each other once a year at the farm womans conference. I missed her when she was when she wasn’t there this year. We always had a good catch-up on each others lives. Anyway I will keep you all in my prayers!
