HAWKER, Amelia Irene (nee Kovach)

September 2, 1925 – April 12, 2012

It is with heavy hearts we share the loss of our mother and grandmother Emily Hawker. Mom was raised in Kipling, Saskatchewan and trained to be a nurse in Yorkton. On December 24, 1948, Emily married Ted Hawker at St Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary. Emily devoted her life to her children and her nursing career at the Bethany Care Centre. She was a loving and caring mother who always put others first. Her generosity extended outside of her family, where she made it her goal during retirement to knit a pair of mittens every day for children in need. Mom enjoyed her last few months at Confederation Park Lodge where she developed new friendships and bonds. Emily was predeceased by her husband Ted in 2011 and is survived by her children Carol (Phil) Rix and Ron (Alexandra) Hawker. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amanda Rix, Jacqueline Rix, Charlie Hawker and Amelia Hawker; her two younger sisters Margaret Swan and Grace Kovach; and her brother Joseph Kovach. We are grateful for the care and compassion provided by the health care professionals on Units 32 and 71 at the Foothills Medical Center. At Emily’s request there will be no funeral services.

  2. Lynn English (Dickieson) :

    To Ron, Carol & Families

We were so sorry to hear about your mom and dad’s passing. They were really great neighbors. Your mom was a friend to our mom for so many years and co-workers for some of those years at the Bethany. Craig remembers her waving her finger at us as she looked from her window to our side door and he was saying goodnight to me. She had an infectious laugh. Dad enjoyed visiting when he knew your mom was baking buns so he could have some of them as her baking was remarkable. She will be greatly missed. Lynn
