HARVIE – Cathrine Leilani (Mack)

May 31, 1958 – November 5, 2010

Leilani left us peacefully on November 5th. Her courage and grace is an inspiration. Leilani is lovingly remembered by her husband Jim and daughter Elizabeth, and her brother Hudson and sister-in-law Patty, her niece Rachel, nephews Hamilton and Sheldon, sister-in-law Jo-Jo Shutty-MacGregor, and her dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents Clarence and Murdena Mack, and her brothers Darrell and Gary (aka Byron MacGregor). Leilani was born and raised in Calgary, and she attended King Edward School before moving to Salmon Arm, BC. After graduation, Leilani worked at CIBC, then returned to Calgary where she worked as an event planner at the Calgary Convention Centre. It was there she met Jim, and they were married on the Garden Terrace on a bitterly cold December 27th, 1992. Leilani was a wonderful mom and adored Elizabeth. She was kind and generous and put others first. Leilani was a great listener, always curious and interested in you, and she loved a good laugh. She was artistic, from her early portrait sketches and doodles, to her paintings, like the Calgary home where her mom was born, to the beautiful needlepoint Christmas stockings that will now mean even more. Broadcasting was also in Leilani’s blood. She loved television and was well informed, watching nightly newscasts not just from Calgary, but her brother’s from Victoria, and others from across the country. She loved games and puzzles, from crosswords and sudoku, to endless hours on the computer and innumerable rounds of Scrabble. Leilani loved animals, especially her dogs Holly and CoCo. She loved her family and friends, and was devoted and loyal. Despite challenges to her health, Leilani did not complain. Special thanks to her palliative care team, and to Jim for his caring and compassion. A private gathering will celebrate Leilani’s life. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. She was beautiful inside and out, and we will miss her dearly. But we know Leilani will always be with us in our hearts, and she will live forever in our memories.

  3. Jacqueline Nowlin Donoghue :

You do not know me but I worked at CFAC from 1952 to 1956, a new graduate from University eager to be in broadcasting. I started as a copy writer then went one to have my own program, ‘It’s A Woman’s World’. Leilani’s father, Clarence, the popular voice of ‘Toast and Marmalade’, had faith in me and let me play many parts in CBC plays and his weekly news recaps. Clarence and beautiful Murdena were so proud of their growing family who often visited the station. I only saw Leilani once..another beauty like her mother nestled in her father’s arms. I am writing this so that Elizabeth would know that many people she does not know remember her family with love and share her loss.
    Sincerely,
    Jacqueline Nowlin Donoghue

    Jim and Elizabeth,

I worked at the Convention Centre many years ago. (I have a sweater just like the one in the picture) Leilani was kind to everyone and she had that special gift of making people feel at ease. I hope your fondest memories will get you through the days ahead. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

    Sincerely,
    Trish Masciola

I was so sorry to hear of Leilani’s passing. I worked with Leilani at the CIBC in Salmon Arm back in 1980, she trained me. We had some very good times together, she was definitely a special person, well liked by all. Clients would often ask for the “hawaiian” girl because of her name. Remember the good times that you had with her, I know I will.
    May she rest in peace.

  16. Mur(dena) Robinson Bowering :

    Dear Jim and Elizabeth,

I had the extreme pleasure of working with both Leilani and Jim at the Calgary Convention Centre. She was the sweetest, most thoughtful person and I have many wonderful memories. I remember us being so shocked when she found out my name was Murdena as I always went by Dena. It was my mother’s name and her mother’s name and we were totally blown away as it’s not that common. We had a really good laugh over it. I too will always remember her beautiful spirit and smile. My heartfelt sympathies to you both. It was my privlege to have known her.
