Hartwell, Judith “Judy” Baker
May 16, 1933 – Springfield, ILL, USA
December 25, 2014 – Calgary, AB, CA
Sadly, with heavy hearts, our mom, Judith (Judy) Baker Hartwell passed away on December 25, 2014 at the age of 81 years.
Judy was born on May 16, 1933 in Springfield, Illinois. She spent most of her early days in Pasadena, California and then Newport Beach during her high school years. Judy’s family spent a great deal of time at the Yacht Club, sailing frequently to Catalina Island where her love of the ocean began. She attended Westridge School for Girls where she made many lifelong friends, and then continued her education at Colorado College.
In April 1952, Judy married Ronald Hartwell in Newport Beach and shortly thereafter moved to Climax, Saskatchewan. Ron was employed as a geologist and was well sitting, so they moved into a trailer on the well site … that’s where the adventure began. They moved to Texas for five years before settling down in Calgary, where they raised four boys. Judy was very much a free spirit. She loved to sing and dance, had a passion for the arts, opera and musical theater. She performed in a number of stage and theatre productions in Calgary.
At age 50, she went back to school to study and was ordained as a minister of the Church of Truth. She studied extensively about the metaphysical world including life after death and would often host group meditation and prayer sessions. During this stage of her life, she fell in love with Cortez Island, B.C. and “lived the island life”. She spent 20 incredibly happy years close to nature. Judy was very sociable and made many friends easily. She enjoyed being near the ocean and loved to travel. One of her favorite places to visit was Paris, France.
Judy will be remembered as having a wonderful spirit, making people laugh, with a zest for life. She passed away peacefully with family members at her side. She is survived by her sons Ronald Jr. and wife Deborah, James and his son Alexander, Gary and his children Tyler and Emma, and her youngest son Todd. Her brother Alan Baker and wife Jackie who also survive her.
Mom will be missed, but never forgotten. She believed in life after death, and said she would make her encore performance in a red Lamborghini. So, look for a glimpse of her smiling with her hair blowing, and the sparkling of her eyes as she is driving her red convertible. She requested not to have a formal service, so please just take a moment to remember our mother in your own special way. In lieu of flowers, please support a local theatre or musical program. A Celebration of Life will be held on mom’s 82nd birthday on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 4:00 P.M. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
