HARMS, Doreen Lillian

 November 27, 1932 – March 8, 2010

Doreen Lillian Harms (nee LaMarsh), beloved wife of Jacob (Jake) Harms, passed away peacefully at home in Calgary, Alberta surrounded by her family on March 8th, 2010.

Doreen was born in the MSA Abbotsford hospital, the younger of two children, and was raised in Huntingdon, BC.  In 1956, she married Jake, a member of the RCAF, and together they spent the next twenty-seven years in many locations. While in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, son Dean was born. This was followed by time in Edmonton, AB and a transfer to France, where daughter Michelle was born. After four years overseas, they returned to Canada, and spent time between Trenton, ON, Edmonton, and Comox, BC.  In 1980, they returned to civilian life with Michelin Tires Canada in Calgary and Vancouver for the next ten years. Following this they began to prepare for their retirement years.  Doreen enjoyed recreational vehicle excursions and camping with her husband and family throughout western Canada. She also enjoyed more extensive trips with Jake to the Eastern provinces, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Alaska.  After reading numerous books on early Australian history, they decided on a four month adventure to Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, bringing back many fond memories.  Doreen enjoyed reading, hiking, cooking, gardening, bowling, and the time spent with her granddaughters. In 2007, Doreen and Jake moved to Calgary to be closer to their children and families. Doreen passed away following a lengthy and courageous battle with severe chronic illnesses.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ken and Myrtle LaMarsh.  She is survived by her husband Jacob, son Dean (Debbie), daughter Michelle Dunbar (Craig), granddaughters Melissa, Jessica, Laura, Carolyn, and Meghan, her sister Shirley Johnson (Ray), nieces Pam Veenbaas (George), and Bev Kruse (Fred).  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calgary Neuropathy Association (www.calgarypners.org). Condolence Messages

  1. It’s with sadness that I heard of Doreen’s passing. I see her heading out on her next grand adventure with a smile on her face, a spring in her step and a glint in her eye. Step outside, look up where the treetops touch the sky and watch the clouds sweep by. Listen to the waves crash on the shore and smell the ocean. We honour Doreen’s life by truly savouring every moment of ours.

To Jake and Family: It is with deep sadness I learn of Doreen’s passing.
To lose a longtime friend (since 1955),
is a shock that will not be forgotten.
I am sure Doreen and Shirley are chatting about old times in Whitehorse
and Trenton. I cannot forget when we last met at Whitehorse Airport (2001), and you and Doreen stayed an extra day to drive me to old and familiar spots.
My Condolences to you and your family.
Let us not lose contact with each other.

This is truly very sad news. We first met Doreen and Jake back in the late 50s when we lived on the same street in St Avold, France….we had some good times!! And we met up again a few times in Canada at various places, I have lots of memories of our visits and life overseas. Doreen always had a smile and was always cheerful.
    She’ll be missed.
