HANSON, Spencer Ross

May 15, 1995 – Calgary, AB
August 28, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Our wonderful son was tragically taken from us early in the morning of Wednesday, August 28, 2013. He will always be remembered for his infectious smile and his joy of life.

Spencer lived most of his life in Calgary, attending Elbow Park Elementary School and Rideau Park Junior High. He moved with his parents to Paris, France in 2010 where he attended the International School of Paris and graduated from high school with Honours. The ISP was where Spencer developed his love and talent for art and explored the integration of engineering principles into his wire frame sculptures, all with the encouragement and help of Mr. James Chedburn, who became Spencer’s mentor. When he was not soldering and bending wire at home, he explored the wonders of Paris and Europe with his circle of friends and classmates who hailed from twenty-seven different countries. Paris was also where, along with his mother, Spencer built on his joy of cooking, making sure to download every episode of Iron Chef to watch his hero Mario Batelli. He planned on continuing to develop his cooking skills and was accepted into the Ferrandi International Cooking School. Although he was half way around the world, Spencer also maintained the friendships he had built in Elementary and Junior High Schools and bragged to his friends in Paris about the friends for life he had in Canada.

Spencer was also a very talented athlete not afraid to try his best at Soccer (Football), basketball, volleyball or floor hockey although downhill skiing was his passion. He began skiing with his family at the age of two and Fernie, BC became the family’s second home during the winter months. Spencer loved to explore Fernie’s hidden powder trails and learn the freestyle skiing skills from his talented coaches at the Fernie Ski School, who all helped to add to his rich experiences in life.

Spencer will be missed by all who knew him, and especially by the family he leaves behind: his mother and father Deborah Shennette and Barry Hanson; brother and ski buddy Matthew; adoring sisters Kirsten and Victoria of Calgary; grandparents Frances Hanson and Orest Fostey of Saskatoon, and Gary and Margaret Shennette of Mississauga; aunts and uncles Mark and Patrice Shennette and cousin Kelly of Barrie, Erik and Kristy Shennette and cousins Christopher, Bradley and Mitchell of Mississauga, Randy and Yvonne Hanson and cousins Nicholas, Alexander (Anapaula), and Chantal of Saskatoon, Arlene and Rob Wells and cousins Aubrey, of Winnipeg and Christa (Brad) of Barrie, Craig and Karen Hanson and cousins Julia and Jasmine of Harris, SK; and Leanne and Kit Cheung and cousins Nathan and Mikayla of Calgary; and his quiet supporter Theo.

“Your memory will always be a part of us.”

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB)  tonight (Friday) from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so prior to the Service at the Church commencing at 12:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.) on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Spencer’s memory may be made directly to the Fernie & District Search and Rescue Society, PO Box 190, Fernie, British Columbia, Canada V0B 1M0.

In living memory of Spencer Hanson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

    Deb and Barry:
Margaret and I are so thankful that we had our visit with the kids only 2 weeks ago. Spencer and I had a particularly good time talking about Paris and cooking. He sure enjoyed seeing my workshop and promised he would be visiting us each commute from Paris to Canada. That was something we were looking forward to. Be thankful for the good years you had with him and the really full life you gave him in the short time he was with us. Time will soften the blow you have received and passing years will give you wonderful memories to look back on. We are praying for you and the family.
All our love Nana and Poppa Shennette

    Dear family of Spencer,

I offer my condolences for your tragic loss, Spencer for me was someone special in Paris. While we all know he had that amazing smile and party attitude. I think one thing that has not been said enough of him is how he always found a way to go against what people tried to convince him was the right way, and lived his life the way he wanted to, always. I have always admired this of him and am now following the accident very releaved always having the thought he at least lived out these 18 years as happy and fulfilled as he possibly could have.

Many of us here in Paris did not have enough time to prepare coming for the funeral but we have all discussed and will at some point come and show our respects to Spencer’s grave together, he meant a great deal to us and will forever remain in our hearts until we all one day meet him in heaven.

Again, I offer my condolences for your loss.

This is not a letter to say goodbye but a letter to say welcome to a new world where even if Spencer is not visible in every day life he will forever remain in so many hearts and minds. He was a hug I looked forward to at school in the mornings. I will remember the French class we had together and trying so hard to pronounce everything right as well as Graduation party hearing him say “we did it you guys! How crazy is that?!” To my last moments with him in Spain where he got everyone to laugh and get along. I am sad I never got my last hug however that last embrace in Spain and that “Don’t worry we will see each other again in the future but for now good luck with your dreams”, and I know he is sticking to that promise and its not goodbye we will meet again and there will be that bright smile and laughter. Spencer is the kind of guy who is happy wherever he may be and I truly believe he is holding his loved ones and watching over them with love and affection and even if he is not visible its your heart that allows you to feel his presence. Love you and miss you Spencer (aka my rainbow fish- the multi colored backpack he always brought to school which made me laugh/ the rainbow fish kid book by Marcus Pfister… those of you who know this book)
    Love forever,
    Chloe Moegling

  13. Dear Deb, Barry, Kirsten, Matt and Victoria
The outpouring of grief on Spencer’s death is a testament to his popularity. He was a true leader, with a sparkle in his eye, and people of all ages were drawn to his natural charisma. One day several years ago, Deb sat in her downtown office working on papers. Out of nowhere, an elastic flew in the air, smacking Deb right in the face. She scowled with pain, quickly followed by a huge grin when she realized that Spencer had snuck up behind a chair to launch the attack. He was irrepressible, and most loved by all his family. You raised and loved a wonderful son and brother who will be greatly missed and always remembered. Love, John, Deni, Kaili and Greg Cashin

I would like to express my most sincere condolence to the Hanson family, Spencer was always here for me and made me smile every single day. As a human being, we cannot be entirely strong when someone so joyful and intelligent and amazing passes away, but we have to try, and trying is all we can do. Spencer was always happy, I never witnessed any negative emotions coming from him. I was his classmate at ISP and he is one of my best friends, when my father passed away, my mother asked me to be strong for him, today she is asking the same of me again, seeing how harsh this shock is for me and my friends.

You are a wonderful family and God will help you and never let you down. From where Spencer is, he will be looking after us and he will forever stay our angel.

    My most sincere condolence,

    A classmate and friend

I offer my deepest condolences to Spencer’s family.
Spencer was an amazing friend and classmate. He was so funny and kind to everyone and with his blue eyes and that big smile on his face he brought happiness to everyone.
His passion was life and that was clearly visible; he was living his life the way he wanted regardless what people said and that is what people liked about him so much. The ideas and plans for the future he had just shows us that Spencer still had so much to live for. I will always remember all the happy moments we shared, and I am lucky to have known Spencer. I am sad I will never see his excitement about even the smallest things or that proud young man presenting his wire sculptures at the Art Vernissage in Paris.
Dear Hanson family, be proud of such a wonderful son and brother who has brought so much happiness in so many lives.
My love and sympathy for the family,

I am so sorry for your loss. You may not remember me, I got the opportunity to know your family for about a year around 10 years ago when I was your nanny. It is with deep sadness that I offer my condolences to Spencer’s family and to all his friends.
Spencer had a bright and joyful soul which will be remembered by all. He never failed to cheer up anyone and everyone, even in the darkest of moments. His energetic and outgoing personality was exemplary, he wasn’t afraid to approach new people and he was always friendly to all. I had the honour of having him as a friend, and his support was greatly appreciated when I needed it the most. Class with him, especially art, was never boring, and we always found new ways of entertaining ourselves.
I unfortunately am not able to attend his funeral but my thoughts and prayers go to the Hanson family. He was amazing person. We have to stay strong together, for Spencer’s sake.

Spencer as a young lad. We’d be ‘designing’ together, just outside his bedroom in your previous Elbow Park home, and Spencer would always want to interact, play or do anything to avoid going to bed. I recall many of your Fernie ski stories but specificially how much fun you and Spencer had skiing together until you were totally exhausted. These, and many other memories are what you will cherish in the years ahead.
