Hamilton, Katherine Anne (nee Jewell)

August 16, 1959 – Edmonton, AB
June 25, 2014 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Kathy Hamilton.  Born August 16, 1959 she passed away on, Wednesday, June 25, 2014, surrounded by loved ones and as beautiful as ever.

Kathy enjoyed dancing and fine arts. She was born and raised in Edmonton, where she graduated from St Francis Xavier High School and completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Alberta (world history) in 1980.  As a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Kathy lived at the infamous ‘Theta House’. It was at this time that she met her future husband, Doug, on a blind date.  He didn’t stand a chance against her infectious smile and laugh.  Since then they have always been together and have been married for thirty-one adventure filled years.  Kathy managed the Double Tree restaurant in Airdrie and then three restaurants at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary.  She enjoyed working for Manpower Temporary Services and then RGO Office Products before moving to Houston in 1997 for fourteen years.  Working with friends in Houston, Kathy developed a pre-K school curriculum called ‘Wiggle World’ integrating Howard Garner’s multiple-intelligences theory into music, literature, movement and imaginative creativity.  She also spearheaded the Women’s Spirituality Ministry at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nassau Bay, Texas, giving busy women the opportunity to grow in their faith journey through workshops, faith groups, book studies, and “faith through the arts”. Kathy did all of this while joyfully working on her most challenging and rewarding job of her too short life, raising her three beautiful children.

In the fall of 2011 Kathy returned to Calgary and shortly after was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer.  She met this challenge with grace and dignity and cherished every moment she had with her children.  During these difficult times she managed to visit Houston several times, tour the UK on a cruise ship and attend the opening of an off Broadway play in New York with her family.  Kathy dedicated her life to her three children and was joking with them up to the day before she passed.

She leaves behind her devoted husband, Douglas; her three incredible children, Keltie, Bridie, and Ross; mother Bernice Jewell; sister Sheilagh (Mike); brothers Bryan (Terry) and Phillip (Jan); along with an overwhelming amount of family and friends.

Kathy’s family would like to invite friends and family to join them at St Mary’s Cathedral (219 18 Ave S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. As per Kathy’s wishes a colourful celebration of life will follow at the Calgary Olympic Park at 4:00 p.m. (Winsport Multi-purpose Room). Prayers will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 7:30 p.m. at M&H Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive SW).

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to ‘KJ’s Crew’ for the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope (1409 Edmonton Trail NE, Suite 105B, Calgary, AB T2E 3K8) donations@ovariancanada.org.

In living memory of Kathy Hamilton, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  4. Brian Rishikof :

It is with great sadness that I learned about the recurrence of KJ’s illness and all too sudden loss. I got to know KJ through Doug and I never really saw them apart. She lit up every room she entered and was the perfect complement to Doug. I offer my sincerest sympathies to him, Keltie, Bridie, and Ross, and to extended family and friends.
