Zoe Faith Laure Hallman, beloved daughter of Alan and Anne and adored baby sister of Chad and Paige of Calgary, passed away suddenly and peacefully at the Alberta Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at the age of 14 months. She was a precious, spirited little girl who blessed and enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Zoe was born on March 8, 2003 in Calgary. She came into this world with many challenges and struggled to get a foothold on life at the Foothills Medical Centre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, dealing with heart issues, lung problems, feeding difficulties, and a rare genetic condition. After a month, she moved a little closer to home when she graduated to the Special Care Nursery at the Rockyview Hospital. Her time there was spent gaining weight and learning to “suck, swallow, breathe”. After six weeks, she was able to come home and although it was only for a short eight days, she truly got to know and love family life. Zoe spent the last year at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Intensive Care Unit, thriving in a sea of love and compassion. Through her strength and determination, and that of her parents, coupled with skilled medical intervention and supportive caregivers, she overcame many challenges, and with each small victory, she brought joy to others. Zoe loved spending time at home on weekends being mauled by her sister, entertained by her brother and having family dinners. She loved music, rattles, Jingle Bells, playing Pat-a-Cake, bath time, and pulling off her vent to get her nurses hopping. More than anything else, she loved her cuddles. She was never more content than when she was rocking in warm, loving arms-preferably Mom’s, but anyone’s would do. She had an infectious smile and would spread it throughout the hospital on her daily walks. People were always so happy to say hello to her and to check out what she was wearing-she truly was a “Fashion Queen.” Zoe’s life was enriched by the many doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and all the other hospital staff who were such a big part of her life. No baby has ever been given more love than Zoe and for that her family is eternally grateful.
Besides her loving parents, Anne and Alan Hallman, Zoe will forever be in the hearts of her siblings, Chad and Paige; and her grandparents, Judy and John Burrows of Canmore, Laure Hallman of Sylvan Lake and Paul Hallman of Red Deer. She is lovingly remembered by her aunties, Kelly Burrows and David Ghandour, Susan Burrows and Earl Hickok, all of Calgary, and Sandra and Shaun Langin of Sylvan Lake, as well as cousins, Hussein, Moe, Bryson, Caleb, Celeste, Michael, and Amber.
